This post contains a PREVIEW for TVA #1

Spider-Gwenis technically now part of theMCUcanon, albeit in a pretty complex way. Following the events ofLokiseason 2, Tom Hiddleston’s titular God of Mischief destroyed the Temporal Loom and freed multiple timelines. This sacrificial act has led to a new era for the Time Variance Authority under the leadership of B-15 and Agent Mobius to monitor and protect all these new timelines. However, it seems as though they’ve also brought some fresh faces on board, such as their new recruit Ghost-Spider aka Spider-Gwen.

Spider-Gwen in Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse

As seen in the new preview forTVA #1byLokiseason 2 writer Katharyn Blair and artist Pere Pérez, Spider-Gwen is now officially part of theTime Variance Authority, having received their assistance after her recent displacement from her home timeline of Earth-65.Likewise, the new preview confirms that the TVA is the same MCU version seen in the live-action series:

Referencing the events ofLokiseasons 1 & 2, this definitely seems to be a first for Marvel, offering what looks to be a quasi-canonical series with connections to both the Marvel Universe of the comics and the MCU, hence Spider-Gwen’s recruitment.

Spider-Gwen Has Been Recruited By The TVA

A Displaced Variant With No Home Timeline

In the new preview, Miss Minutes, Mobius, and B-15 are all shownrecalling the events of Lokiseason 2 and how they’ve entered a new era for the TVA, as was featured in 2024’sDeadpool & Wolverine. Likewise, previous comic series likeSpider-Gwen: The Ghost Spiderhave shown Ke Huy Quan’s O.B. serving as Gwen’s handler who’s been helping her adjust to her new life in the comics' Earth-616 as she’s currently unable to return home to Earth-65.Now, Gwen now looks to be an outright agent of the TVA, thigh holster and all.

“It does seem as though the new rule being established in this new series is that the TVA and its agents can operate with characters and timelines from the comics just as much as those in the live-action MCU…”

Because the TVA exists outside of time and space with access to multiple timelines and realities, it follows that its canonical status can afford to be a little more fast and loose, ambiguous, flexible, nebulous, and all of the above. That said, it does seem as though the new rule being established in this new series is that the TVA and its agents can operate with characters and timelines from the comics just as much as those in the live-action MCU. It’s a very exciting prospect, one that comes with some very intriguing possibilities.

Are We One Step Closer To A Live-Action Spider-Gwen?

The TVA Makes It Kinda Complicated

Keeping the above ideas in mind, it’s not a stretch to imagine that the TVA serving as a prime vehicle to bring established comic characters into the MCU, like Spider-Gwen. However, one has to also keep in mindSony’s animatedSpider-Versemovies, its own Spider-Gwen voiced by Hailee Steinfeld who also plays the MCU’s Kate Bishop, and their own multiversal connections to the MCU which could certainly make things pretty confusing. Regardless, the concept still stands in theory whether it’s Spider-Gwen or any other comics character Marvel Studios might want to instantly bring into the MCU. The TVA can help make it happen.
