My Old Ass, a quirky new coming-of-age movie now streaming on Amazon Prime, follows young Elliott (Maisy Stella) on the precipice of her adult life as she navigates questions of identity, familial relationships, and romantic interests. All of this becomes much more complicated when she trips on mushrooms alongside her two best friends and seemingly hallucinates the older version of herself, played by Aubrey Plaza. AlthoughtheMy Old Assendingleaves the exact nature of Older Elliott’s existence somewhat ambiguous, her accurate predictions and the fact that other characters can see her suggest, somehow, Older Elliott is real.
In addition to the plot regarding her older self, Elliott faces a number of personal dilemmas, among them her complex feelings for Chad, whom Older Elliott warned her to avoid because ofChad’s fate, and the shocking news thather parents have decided to sell their cranberry farm, which has been in their family for generations. Earlier in the movie, Elliott made it clear that she had no interest in staying on her family farm (or spending all that much time with her family before she left for college). Despite those feelings, Elliott is clearly devastated by her parents' decision.

Elliott’s Family Couldn’t Pass Up The Money Being Offered For The Cranberry Farm
The cast ofMy Old Assis relatively small, most of it comprising Elliott’s friends and her family, which consists of her mother, father, and two brothers, Max and Spencer. Elliott had made it known that she had"no desire"to be a farmer and continue her family legacy. However, the middle child of her family, Max, did want to take over the cranberry farm, so the future of the family business seemed secure.
This made it all the more shocking when it was dropped on Elliott that, not only was the farm being sold after the fall harvest, but also, nearly everyone else knew about this sale long before Elliott did. After Max reveals this information, Elliott angrily confronts her father, asking if they are selling it because she wasn’t staying to take it over. Her father explained that there were"lots of reasons"they were selling the farm, none of which had to do with Elliott.

It seems Elliott’s parents chose to sell the farm primarily for financial reasons.
While her dad didn’t clarify the entire list of factors, it seems Elliott’s parents chose to sell the farm primarily for financial reasons. Her dad explained,“We got a really good offer we couldn’t turn down,“suggesting finances were a major factor. This also makes sense in light of conversations throughoutMy Old Assregarding how there wasn’t much money in the cranberry farm business and given Chad’s family had sold their own cranberry farm long before.

Why Elliott Is So Devastated About The Cranberry Farm Being Sold (Despite Not Wanting To Run It)
Elliott Cared More About The Family Farm Than She Realized
Even with Elliott frequently doubling down on the fact that she had no interest in taking over the family farm, she was clearly devastated to know that the cranberry farm was being sold. When she confronted her father, she demanded to know how they could be doing such a thing, yelling,“This is our lifeblood. This is our roots.“Understandably, this is a prime example of someone not understanding what they have or what it means to them until they are facing losing it.
In many ways, this is the message ofMy Old Ass. Throughout the movie, Older Elliott works to get Elliott to improve her relationships with her family, spend more time with her siblings, and appreciate her parents (especially her mom) more. In the end, Older Elliott seems to be successful, as Elliott endsMy Old Asswith a newfound love and appreciation for the people in her life and the cranberry farm she grew up on.
