Yasuke’s inclusion inAssassin’s Creed Shadowsis a defining element of the game, but aside from a brief stint in the prologue, it can actually take a while to start playing as him. As an outsider who finds his way into Oda Nobunaga’s inner circle, Yasuke has an interesting story that ultimately sets him on a quest for justice and revenge. He shares the spotlight with a shinobi named Naoe, though, and she surprisingly gets all the attention to herself for a while after the prologue.
It’s eventually possible toswap to Yasukeon the fly. Before that happens, however, Naoe first has to reach a point where Yasuke’s involvement in her story makes sense. As the two start the game on opposite sites of Nobunaga’s quest to unify Japan, that process can take a while. Just how long you spend playing Naoe exclusively will depend on how much side content you do, but even sticking to the main story,there are a few specific tasks that have to be completed.
You Can Play As Yasuke After The Lightning And Thunder Quest
Naoe Has Some Targets To Assassinate First
Yasuke will ultimately be available to play again in the Lightning and Thunder quest, and he becomes freely available as a general option shortly after. Before reaching this point, Naoe has plenty of cutscenes of conversations to go through, as well as a couple of important quests.The first two targets among the Shinbakufu both need to be assassinated, although the order in which Naoe approaches them doesn’t matter. After completing them both, Naoe can embark upon her next objective, which brings Yasuke back into the picture.

Skip The Side Content If Yasuke Is A Priority
Like in the prologue, Yasuke has a bit more discrete story content before the two join forces, but the ability to switch between Naoe and Yasuke on the fly is immediately available after completing the story content surrounding Lightning and Thunder. For those who have been taking their time with side content,this could easily be ten hours into the game, but it’s possible to get there significantly fasterby focusing only on the central Shinbakufu quests to assassinate Onryo characters. One of thesequests focuses on a tea ceremony, while the other is a bit more action-oriented.

Once Yasuke re-enters the main story, it’s entirely possible to play through most of the remaining game as him, largely stick to Naoe, or find an appropriate mix of each. Certain missions will require one character or the other — or evenbounce between both. A choice is offered in most scenarios, however, and both are always available for roaming the world. For anyone eager to start smashing enemies with a kanabo, the wait to play Yasuke freely inAssassin’s Creed Shadowsmight be longer and more agonizing than expected, but a few key assassinations will ultimately serve to get the ball rolling.
