Why “To You” Was Chosen For Squid Game Season 2, Episode 5’s Gi-hun Team Scene

The happy & optimistic song contrasts with the terrifying game

In a recentNetflix interview, the writer and director of Squid Game Hwang Dong-hyuk joked about choosing the song “To You” by Shin Hae-chul during filming. He reveals that hewanted to have a happy song playing during such a terrifying sequencebecause of the stark juxtaposition and contrast between the reality of the scene and the optimistic sense of collaboration between the players. The ensuing silence as Player 001 tries to get the Spinning Top right adds tension so that when he does finally nail it, the song resumes and carries the team to the finish line inSquid Gameseason 2.
