Of course, hero deaths are nothing new in comic books, but the refreshing thing aboutWonder Woman#19 is the way it plays with genre expectations to make the moment of Diana’s demise as impactful as possible. The dagger seems as though it will continue to have importance in the ongoing story after this issue – which is narratively necessary, considering…this is now officially the dagger that killed Wonder Woman.

At the same time, there is a clear sense of foreboding pervading the issue, as author Tom King effectively walks the line between telegraphing the outcome and surprising readers. Crucially, the dagger seems as though it will continue to have importance in the ongoing story after this issue – which is narratively necessary, considering that whether Diana is resurrected in subsequent issues or not, this is now officially the dagger that killed Wonder Woman.
