What The Substance’s Wild Third Act Meant For The Film

The 2024 Horror Movie Didn’t Please Everyone

Monstro Elisasue and the pure blood and gore ofThe Substance’s endingis one of the most shocking aspects of the film, but it’s also been quite divisive. Though critics generally enjoyed the movie, as evidenced by its 90% score onRotten Tomatoes, the film’s wild left turn has been more divisive for general audiences. The Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes is a lukewarm 70%, and viewers who didn’t like the ending have also been fairly vocal on social media.

The Substance’s Most Heartbreaking Scene Is A Microcosm Of The Whole Movie

Demi Moore’s most grounded and emotionally realistic scene in The Substance also dramatically serves as a microcosm of the entire movie.

Love it or hate it, however,The Substance’s ending has announced Fargeat as major figure in the world of horror.Revenge(2017), her 2017 indie thriller, was also well-received and features some surprising moments of violence, buther 2024 effort means there’s now a great deal of anticipation regarding what she will do next. As noted in many ofThe Substance’s reviews, Fargeat has a clear directorial style, and having a unique voice is something that all great filmmakers possess.

Our Take On Monstro Elisasue In The Substance

Fargeat’s Wild Swing Works

ThoughThe Substance’s third act may have been divisive, these kinds of wild swings are worth celebrating. The alternative, after all, is something that plays it safe, which is far less interesting, especially in a genre like horror. Plus,Monstro Elisasue ultimately plays into key themes of the filmregarding bodily standards and aging.

Moore’s performance in Fargeat’s film was a particular highlight, and her eventual transformation into Monstro Elisasue is at once terrifying, tragic, and so ridiculous as to be funny. The fact that Monstro Elisasue is cropping up as a cosplay only speaks toThe Substance’s impressive reach as a film and the strength of Fargeat’s grotesque vision.
