Dr. Cain (Morris Chestnut), a popular but reviled villain onThe Resident, exited the series somewhat unceremoniously, making some fans wonder why he had to go. Dr. Barrett Cain was a neurosurgeon hired by Red Rock Medical with the expectation that he would turn around Chastain Park Memorial Hospital’s finances. His first appearance comes in season 3, episode 1, “From the Ashes”, where he posits himself as a charming, superhuman doctor who won’t let anyone die in his O.R., as he famouslyquotes in one ridiculous moment inThe Resident.

All of this bravado is simply a cover for his true nature, which is a power-hungry and wealth-obsessed doctor who wants to make as much as possible from his patients, never thinking about the danger he’s exposing them to. In season 3, Cain finds any excuse to needle Randolph Bell (Bruce Greenwood), who was demoted and replaced by Cain.Despite his villainous attitude, Cain shows some signs of humanityand after his ex-girlfriend, Justine (Aisha Kabia), dies under his operating knife, Cain shows real regret and empathy.

One idea included Cain tempting Billie’s son, Trevor (Miles Fowler), to pursue work in big pharma. Cain would represent a surgeon beholden to pharma money, and the storyline would explore the dark side of big pharma. Instead of returning as Dr. Cain inThe Resident, Chestnut went on to star in the failed TV showOur Kind of Peopleas Raymond Dupont and in the successful miniseries,The Best Man: The Final Chaptersas Lance Sullivan. Chestnut is also set to have a big role inReasonable Doubtas Corey Cash and inWatsonas Dr. John Watson.
