Adams Reveals That It Was His Personal Decision To Leave Suits

It Wasn’t Because Of Meghan Markle’s Exit

According to the reports, Adams' exit fromSuitsstemmed from Meghan Markle’s retirement from show business as she got ready to join the British Royal Family bymarrying Prince Harry. The pair had playedthe show’s first romantic couple, Mike and Rachel, and it would be difficult to continue the series with one without the other. At that point, they had also gone through so much, with Harvey’s mentee having successfully been accepted into the bar despite going to prison for being a fraud and not going to a proper law school.

Suits’ Theme Song Explained: “Greenback Boogie” Lyrics & Meaning

The legal drama Suits opens with an addicting theme song, “Greenback Boogie” performed by the rock band Ima Robot. Here’s what it means.

Korsh decided that instead of breaking them up,Suitswould write out the pair together. Following their long-delayed wedding,Mike and Rachel secretly decided to move to Seattleand leave their high-profile jobs in New York to start a new life. The explanation for both Adams and Mike’s departure made sense, but the actor revealed that his decision to leave had nothing to do with Markle’s situation. In a new interview withJesse Tyler Ferguson’sDinner’s On Mepodcast, he said that he needed to leave the show for his own mental and marital health. Read his full explanation below:

Mike and Harvey from Suits

I wasn’t taking good care of my mental health, and I was drinking too much [at] the end of season seven. I was in a zone of living a pretty unexamined life. Pretty miserable [and] I would say, pretty depressed. I didn’t have the tools to deal with that depression beyond just spending money and drinking too much, and not really knowing how to talk about it.

I would numb myself [to] deal with my insecurity and my fears. And they just weren’t working. And they were taking a toll on my relationship, for sure, but also just making me a very not present father. That for me was a breaking point when I was like, “I think I should stop drinking probably, because I don’t wanna be that dad.” The best thing I think I ever did for myself was stop drinking. It just needed to happen in order for all these other things to happen.

The only reason to stay was … money. I didn’t know what else to offer. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and think about the money [Suitsstar Gabriel Macht] made those last two years, but I never regretted the decision for a second. It was the right thing for my marriage … it was time.

Adams' Reason For Leaving Suits As Mike Is Justified

Mike’s Departure Was Hard But Adams Made The Right Choice To Leave Suits

Much has been said abouthow Mike’s departure changedSuits. At that point, the legal drama had already lost an original character, Jessica Pearson, after Gina Torres decided to bid the project farewell. She returned a couple of times and was even instrumental inMike eventually becoming a proper lawyer, but that didn’t make Adams' exit easier.Suitsincorporated the character’s exit into its storytelling as Harvey struggled to get used to not having his mentee around, but even as the show attempted to move on, it’s safe to say that it was never the same after Adams left.

As important as his work was, there’s no arguing that Adams did the right thing by prioritizing his marriage, as that was and remains far too important.

Learning now how much he was struggling back then makes it so much easier to accept losing Mike inSuits. His departure wasn’t just because of Markle’s impending Hollywood retirement. Instead, it was a needed move for his personal life. As important as his work was, there’s no arguing that Adams did the right thing by prioritizing his marriage, as that was and remains far too important. If anything, the actor speaking about this now makes his subsequent returns as Mike more special, as they meant that he truly valued being onSuits.

Can Adams Still Return As Mike In Suits LA?

Harvey Is Already Heading Down To California

Adams has been clear about his interest in reprising Mike inSuits LA’s story. Even if he does, however, his best bet in having a role in Korsh’s new show is through a mini-arc. Because of the way the originalSuitsended, he cannot join the spinoff without raising questions about the life that he has in Seattle with Harvey, Rachel, and Donna. That said, seeing Mike again, especially afterSuits' renaissance, in any capacity is better than nothing.

Currently,Gabriel Macht is already confirmed to appear inSuits LA. This paves the way for Mike to eventually follow suit. That would be a much betterSuitsreturn for both of them.
