Mandalorian society has a fascinating hierarchy in theStar Warsgalaxy, one that’s divided between larger houses and smaller clans. While there were likely many different clans and houses before Mandalore’s brief shift to pacifism during the Republic Era and the Great Purge during the Imperial Era, several have still been identified in the canon and live on in theNew Republic Era, thanks to series such asStar Wars Rebels,The Mandalorian, and moreStar Warsmedia. This also includes the clan of two created byDin Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his newly adopted son Grogu.

Traditionally in Mandalorian culture, a Mand’alor serves as the planet’s ruler. Likewise, their particular house is considered to be the royal family, while the other houses continue to serve as Mandalore’s largest and most powerful factions. Each house then consists of smaller clans who have typically pledged fealty and loyal support, though Mandalore’s troubled history has certainly created deviations from this concept. To that end, here’s every known Mandalorian house and clan in theStar Warscanon explained, completely and succinctly.

10House Vizsla

The Lineage of the First Mandalorian Jedi

In the ancient past of theStar Warstimeline, House Vizsla was founded byTarre VIzsla, the first-ever Mandalorian Jediwho created the legendary Darksaber. The Darksaber itself became a major symbol of leadership on Mandalore after Tarre served as the world’s ruler. Upon his death, the Darksaber was held in the halls of the Jedi Temple until it was stolen by House Vizsla during the Old Republic, uniting Mandalore under the rule of a new Mand’alor.

Notable members of House Vizsla include Pre Vizsla, leader of the Mandalorian terrorist group known as the Death Watch. During the Clone Wars, the Darth Watch fought to reestablish Mandalore’s warrior waysthat had been abandoned by the New Mandalorians' pacifist government during the Republic Era. Pre also wielded the Darksaber until he was slain by Darth Maul.

In The New Republic Era, Paz Vizsla was a leading member of the Children of the Watch, who also tried and failed to claim the Darksaber from Din Djarin. His son Ragnar also took the Mandalorian creed shortly before the Reclamation of Mandalore and the defeat of Moff Gideon and his Imperial Remnant forces who’d been occupying their Mandalorianhomeworld.House Vizsla was primarily made up of Clan Vizsla, Clan Wren, and Clan Saxon.

9House Kryze

Bo-Katan and Satine’s Bloodline

House Kryze served as the prominent royal family during the Republic Era, having produced Duchess Satine Kryze who led the New Mandalorian pacifist government following the ecological devastation of Mandalore, the result of a years-long civil war between warring houses and clans. Following her death at the hands of Maul during his takeover of the planet,Satine’s sister Bo-Katan Kryze rose to lead Mandalore. A member of Death Watch before it was co-opted by Maul, Bo-Katan eventually became Mandalore’s regent after the Republic helped end Maul’s rule over the planet, though the role wouldn’t last long following the Empire’s rise.

That said, Bo-Katan and her fellow Mandalorians who refused to bow down to the Empire (via Clan Saxon) received support from Rebel cells to take back the planet. Kryze herself was also given the Darksaber and the right to rule by Sabine Wren. This resulted in several clans offering fealty to House Kryze as they continued the fight against the Empire. However, the tragedy of theGreat Purge of Mandaloresaw Bo-Katan spending years trying to earn the Darksaber, unite her people, and reclaim her homeworld (and finally succeeding as seen inThe Mandalorianseason 3).

House Kryze was traditionally based on the world of Kalevala. Other notable members of House Kryze include Bo-Katan and Satine’s nephew Korkie. Their father Adonai was also a former leader of Mandalore and House Kryze.

8House Kast

Members Served The Death Watch & Maul’s Shadow Collective

Not much is known about House Kast compared to Houses Vizsla and Kryze. However, members of this final identified house were part of Darth Maul’s Death Watch and his Shadow Collective during his Mandalore takeover. One of the most notable is seemingly Rook Kast who led Maul’s Mandalorians alongside Gar Saxon as seen in the final episodes ofThe Clone Warsseason 7, though there isn’t yet hard confirmation.

That said, Clan Rook is part of House Kast, so a connection with Rook Kast does seem likely.House Kast is best known for pledging its loyalty to Bo-Katan Kryze as seen inStar WarsRebels’season 4 premiere. The artist Veraslayn Kast is also a member. The House name itself is likely derived fromLegends' Jodo Kast, the bounty hunter who gained notoriety and bigger payouts by posing as Boba Fett by wearing similar armor (until the real Fett tracked him down).

7Clan Saxon

Worked With The Empire

Saxon is one of the most notorious of the known Mandalorian clans. Part of House Vizsla, members of Clan Saxon served as super commandos duringMaul’s takeover of Mandalore, most notably Gar Saxon. During the Imperial Era, Gar Saxon agreed to serve the Empire and serve as Mandalore’s governor, with members of his clan receiving Imperial-styled white supercommando armor, effectively deposing House Kryze.

Following Gar Saxon’s duel with Sabine Wren and his execution at the hands of Ursa Wren, Gar’s brother Tiber took up the role of Mandalore’s governor for the Empire. However, he also died alongside the Rebels' destruction of the superweapon he intended to use against his fellow Mandalorians who’d been resisting the Empire’s rule. As such, the end of Clan Saxon was the start of greater Mandalorian unity between clans and loyalty to Kryze(ahead of the Great Purge).

6Clan Wren

Sabine’s Family

Clan Wren was initially a part of House Vizsla in theStar Warstimeline. As such, its leader Ursa Wren and her Mandalorian forces were initially part of the Death Watch, though they broke off with Bo-Katan Kryze following Pre Vizsla’s death at the hands of Maul. Likewise, they also fought with Kryze and the Republic’s 332nd Company to end Maul’s hold on Mandalore at the end of The Clone Wars.

That said, Clan Wren aligned with Clan Saxon during the Imperial Era, believing it had no choice but to bend the knee for the sake of its survival. However,Ursa’s daughter and Rebel operative Sabine Wren convinces Clan Wren to fight back, having returned the Darksaber to Mandalore in the hopes of uniting the clans against the Empire. Other notable members of Clan Wren include Alrich and Tristan (Sabine’s father and brother). However,The Great Purge of Mandalore resulted in Clan Wren’s complete destruction, leaving Sabine as the only survivor as she had been off-world training to be a Jedi with Ahsoka Tano.

5Clan Rook

Pledged To House Kast

As previously mentioned,Clan Rook was a vassal of House Kast. They also pledged loyalty to Bo-Katan Kryze inRebels’season 4 premiere, alongside the many other clans who vowed to resist the Empire. Rook seems to share Kast’s coiled vexis serpent sigil as well. Beyond that, there isn’t much that’s known about Clan Rook in the establishedStar Warscanon.

4Clan Awaud

The Old Mandalorians

Having only been referenced in theStar Wars:Friends Like Theseroleplaying book from Fantasy Flight Games,Clan Awaud was part of the Old Mandalorian movementthat splintered off during the Republic Era in light of the New Mandalorian government and the push for pacifism. While Clan Awald chose to keep to the old ways and were similarly exiled from Mandalore, they did not seek vengeance upon the New Mandalorians like Pre Vizsla and the Death Watch. Clan Awaud was led by its chieftain Nam Beroya, and his adoptive daughter Vera succeeded him after his alleged death.

3Clan Eldar

Pledged To Bo-Katan Kryze

Having sworn allegiance to Bo-Katan Kryze duringRebels’season 4 premiere,Clan Eldar can be identified by their lion-like sigil and predominantly dark green and orange armor. Members of Clan Eldar were also seen years later following the Great Purge, having joined the tribe known as the Children of the Watch during the New Republic Era. Live-action members of Clan Eldar and their flag can be seen inThe Mandalorianseason 3.

2Children of the Watch

Descendants Of The Death Watch

Led by their Armorer,The Children of the Watch are a tribe who seek to live by “The Way of the Mandalore”, keeping with the most ancient warrior traditions of Mandalorian culture and creeds. While comprised of multiple clans, this tribe was primarily founded by those who were once part of the Death Watch and survived the Great Purge (having been hidden on the world of Concordia). The Children of Watch also produced Din Djarin who’d once been a foundling in their care, having grown up to become one of their best warriors.

Despite being considered zealots by other Mandalorians, the Children of Watch eventually came together under the leadership of Bo-Katan Kryze and her reclaimed followers, having proven her worth to both groups of Mandalorians and earning the Darksaber once more. As such, the Children of the Watch were crucial in the Reclamation of Mandalore as seen inThe Mandalorianseason 3. Aside from The Armorer, Din Djarin, and his adopted son Grogu, the Children of the Watch is also the tribe of Paz Vizsla and his son Ragnar.

1Clan Mudhorn

A Clan of Two

Originating from the Children of the Watch,Clan Mudhorn was created during the New Republic Era. Led by Din Djarin, the clan is only made up of Djarin himself and his adopted son Grogu. Inspired by the mudhorn the duo defeated shortly after their first meeting, Clan Mudhorn’s skull signet was created and bestowed upon Djarin and Grogu by the Watch’s Armorer.

Together, Djarin and Grogu played a critical role in uniting the various clans under Bo-Katan Kryze to take back Mandalore. They also helped defeat theImperial Remnant’s Moff Gideon. Now, Clan Mudhorn is working to track down other Imperial warlords for the New Republic, and will soon be featured in their own movie from Jon Favreau,TheMandalorian & Grogu.
