The First Descendantisn’t as popular as it once was and developerNexon is making it clear that it has plans to turn things around. After a brief period in the spotlight following a successful launch, the hype surrounding the Unreal Engine 5 looter-shooter has dwindled as players become increasingly frustrated with the lack of communication from the studio. Beyond that, it’s been a while since news on future content was shared, making many wonder what ideas Nexon has in mind for its game.

Responding to a plethora of comments on its blog,Nexonmade it clear that it’s listening to players' feedback, going so far as to confirm thatThe First Descendant’s second season will introduce two new playable characters. That may be exciting, but Nexon went further by locking in a new Ultimate Descendant who is also planned to launch for Season 2; Going forward, the studio made it clear that it wants to offer a more diverse range of heroes and loot for players to work toward. A range of appearance options will also be added to better facilitate character customization.

The First Descendant Needs A Better Story

Those Characters Should Be Good For Something

WhileThe First Descendant’s mechanics are decent at providing the satisfying progression grindnecessary for a looter-shooter, the experience lacks flavor. Nexon admitted as much by acknowledging that players are demanding more story content that provides some insight into the cast of characters, including information on their backstories and motivations. The studio confirmed that it’s designing future content with this in mind as it pivots away from the overarching plotto provide more narrative momentsfocused on its characters.

This isn’t to say the gameplay will remain unaltered as Nexon also has some major plans for how the community playsThe First Descendant. It’s already working on new end-game content to provide veterans with an extra challenge while also reworking the early missions to be more accommodating for new players.Perhaps most exciting is the addition of a “Target Reward” system that acts as a pity timer, giving players a guaranteed chance tograb a piece of lootthey’ve been eyeing if they’ve missed it too many times.

The First Descendant Is Getting Some Necessary Changes

Nexon Needs To Put In The Work

I firmly believe that if a developer wants an audience to care about a live-service game they must provide a reason to really dedicate time rather than money. I think Nexon is making some smart moves:The addition of “Target Rewards” will go a long way to ensure players aren’t left feeling like they’re grinding for nothing. As for the story,I couldn’t care for the game’s plotor characters but for those who have connected with it, I’m glad they’ll hopefully get the content they’re looking for.
