What The Electric State Trailer Means
The Russo Brothers Have Fully Gone Netflix
The trailer forThe Electric Statehighlights how the Russo Brothers areworking to blend their successful Marvel Cinematic Universe formula with more Netflix-friendly material. Their previous Netflix outing, the spy movieThe Gray Man, was a franchise-starting title featuringCaptain Americastar Chris Evans, and this new movie continues to boast their Marvel credentials by featuringGuardians of the Galaxy’s Chris Pratt andThe Winter Soldier’s Anthony Mackie. However, the new movie opts to put Netflix darling andStranger ThingsstarMillie Bobby Brown front and center, announcing its intentions to lean more toward the streamer’s typical brand.
Millie Bobby Brown has starred in multiple Netflix movies on top of her work onStranger Things, includingEnola Holmes, its sequel, andDamsel.

However, the directors haven’t left their Marvel instincts behind entirely. The trailer forThe Electric Stateis pointedly epic, showcasing the world around the characters as much as the stars themselves. Thiscould indicate that there are eventual plans to launch an interconnected franchiseset in the movie’s alternate 1990s, though the Russos may only be involved as producers, considering the fact that they are attached to theupcoming Marvel moviesAvengers: DoomsdayandAvengers: Secret Wars.
Our Take On The Electric State Trailer
The Movie’s Tone May Present A Problem
WhileThe Gray Manwas successful on Netflix, the Russo Brothers have not always been able to capture a Marvel-level audiencewith their post-Endgamework. In particular, this was the case with the Tom Holland-led crime dramaCherry, which barely made a blip in its limited theatrical release and subsequent Apple TV+ debut, earning a 37% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
This could be the case withThe Electric Stateas well. Whenever the trailershowcases its robots, their family-friendly design and wacky voice acting are reminiscent of John Krasinski’sIF, which grossed $190.3 million against a $100 million budget and likely did not break even in theaters. This could indicate that the directors' new movie will have a similarly lukewarm reception given its huge reported budget of $320 million.
