James Gunn’sCreature Commandosconfirms the events of a DCEU movie are part ofDCUcanon.Creature Commandosofficially launches the DC Universe with a first dive into its expansive lore. Among other details,Creature Commandos' two-episode premierereveals that the world is inhabited by a wide variety of metahumans, monsters, and mythical figures. For instance, Victor Frankenstein created Eric Frankenstein and the Bride in Pokolistan. Meanwhile, the sorceress Circe leads a group of human rebels to attack Pokolistan to instigate an invasion into Themyscira.
The DCU is set to establish a new DC continuity in both live-action and animation, hence why the Justice League hasn’t been created by the events of James Gunn’sSuperman, and whythe DCU’s “Gods and Monsters” chapterwill follow a wide variety of characters not seen in the DCEU. However, the DCU does retain certain connections to previous DCEU titles, namelythe DCEU actors reprising their roles in the DCU— mostly in projects such asCreature Commandos,Peacemakerseason 2, andWaller.

FollowingCreature Commandos' opening news report about Circe and the Sons of Themyscira’s attack on Pokolistan,Viola Davis' Amanda Waller and Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. acknowledge the events ofThe Suicide Squad. When explaining Task Force M to Flag, Waller describes Weasel as"one of the few soldiers still alive from Project Starfish in Corto Maltese", thus confirming thatThe Suicide Squad’s Task Force X stopped Starro in the DCU as well. Waller immediately addresses Rick Flag Jr.’s death in Corto Maltese — killed by teammate Peacemaker, as seen inThe Suicide Squad.
The DCU’s First Scene Already Set Up Wonder Woman’s Debut After Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman 3 Cancellation
Creature Commandos episode 1 sets up the Amazons' conflict with humanity, teasing Wonder Woman’s introduction despite her lack of DCU projects.
Rick Flag Sr. also mentions that Amanda Waller was forbidden from creating a new team after Waller’s daughter outed her out. This is a reference to the events ofThe Suicide Squad’s spinoff show,Peacemaker, where Amanda Waller’s daughter Leota Adebayo cleared out Peacemaker’s name and unveiled Task Force X’s activities to the press, exposing Waller’s questionable methods and requesting ARGUS to be investigated by the authorities. The DCU’s upcomingWallershowwill likely reveal how the titular character avoided legal repercussins and why she’s still in charge of secret operations like Task Force M.

James Gunn’sThe Suicide Squadsoft-rebooted Task Force X afterSuicide Squad’s mixed reception. Characters like Viola Davis' Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag Jr., and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn were technically the same ones introduced in David Ayer’sSuicide Squad, and Harley suggested she had already participated in a previous mission with Flag and Captain Boomerang before. However,The Suicide Squadleft its connections toSuicide Squadand the rest of the DCEU vague enough to stand on its ownin order to avoid unnecessary comparisons.
Peacemakerseason 1 did include a clear connection to the DCEU in the form of the Justice League’s cameo at the end of episode 8. Therefore, the JLA’s failed intervention in the Butterfly invasion will no longer be considered part of Peacemaker’s story.

The Suicide Squadacknowledged the existence of other metahumans. For instance, Amanda Waller revealed that Bloodsport"sent Superman to the ICU with a Kryptonite bullet". However,The Suicide Squadnever clarified which version of Superman Waller referred to. This ambiguity makes it easy for DCU installments likeCreature Commandosto incorporate the events ofThe Suicide Squadinto DCU canon. Although James Gunn didn’t know the DCEU was going to be rebooted into the DCU, his decision to separateThe Suicide Squadfrom DCEU canon turned out to be the wisest one.
