An acclaimed comedy, which has been praised by Steven Spielberg, just received a long-awaited release date atNetflix. In terms of its television offerings, it’s arguable that Netflix has become the streaming version of broadcast networks. There are supernatural teen dramas likeWednesday, which might have existed on The CW in a different era, and there are plenty of political thrillers, likeThe Diplomat, which seems like a companion to broadcast TV darlingThe West Wing. But one aspect the streamer still struggles with is the TV comedy.

This was proven recently with thequick cancellation ofThe ’90s Show, which tumbled in viewership after a strong first season. The argument is that, although streamers can successfully launch a drama, comedies generally need more episodes to build a relationship with their audiences than the typical eight-episode run that streaming comedies get. That may be true, but one Netflix comedy started off with a rush of acclaim and it is finally returning.
