The idea was thatthe Inquisitors will act as a task forceto find and eliminate any remaining Jedi hiding in the galaxy by using their own connection to the Force, as well as the latest Imperial intel. However, the Inquisitors quickly revealed themselves to be more than just agents of the Dark Side – they were all once Jedi themselves.

InDarth Vader#6, Vader is investigating the Jedi archives when he stumbles upon an unknown enemy wielding a red lightsaber. The two engage in a fierce battle, with Vader gaining the upper hand, but right before he can deal the killing blow, Palpatine appears and stops his apprentice, explaining thatthe man is the Grand Inquisitor and a new group–the Inquisitors–are now part of the Sith.Palpatine leads both theGrand Inquisitor and Vaderon a tour to see this new and secret group of Dark Siders.
Palpatine puts the Inquisitors under Vader’s command, believing that…the newly assembled order is exactly what the Empire needs to find and execute any remaining Jedi.
It is revealed that the Inquisitors were once Jedi themselves, but turned against their masters and the Jedi years before Order 66. Many of these Inquisitors were young padawans undergoing training before they chose to slay their masters and any other Jedi around to see their actions. Palpatine puts theInquisitors under Vader’s command, believing that, due to their disturbing background and hatred for the Jedi they share with Vader, the newly assembled order is exactly what the Empire needs to find and execute any remaining Jedi.

The Grand Inquisitor First Appeared In The Series Premiere OfStar Wars: Rebels
The Inquisitors were introduced into the film/television realm inStar Wars: Rebels. For most of the first season, the Grand Inquisitor makes life for the Rebels on Lothal extremely difficult. By the end of Season One, Kanan Jarrus defeats the Grand Inquisitor, only later discovering the truth about his Jedi origins. In season 2, episode 18, entitled “Shroud of Darkness,” Kanan, Ezra, and Ahsoka travel to the Jedi temple of Lothal to seek answers on how todefeat the Inquisitors once and for all.Each Jedi is sent down a separate path through the Force to test them.
