This is why Luke Skywalker is the “new hope,” not simply because he marks the return of the Jedi, but becausethe Empire’s reputation popped like a balloon when he fired that fateful shot.

One of the most striking scenes in theAndorseason 2 trailer shows Cassian walking away from an explosion, clearly having just conducted a bombing. Surprisingly, though, everything about the shot - including the lighting - suggeststhis is actually an attack on Coruscant itself. I’m absolutely shocked to see rebels not only operating on Coruscant (as inAndorseason 1), but also openly attacking the Empire.

Andor season 1 ended with an explosive finale, leading many to wonder what season 2 has in store for the characters of Star Wars’ most exciting show.
To understand why this is so shocking, you first need a grasp of theStar Warsgalaxy map. The Empire had always looked strongest in the majority-human Galactic Core, where Palpatine maintained strong support (many of these worlds ultimately helped re-establish the First Order). Resistance and rebellion were common toward the Outer Rim. Rebel attacks on Coruscant change everything, though, because they puncture the Imperial reputation of near-invincibility. Brought before Grand Moff Tarkin inA New Hope, Leia issued a stirring comment; “The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin,” she insisted, “the more star systems will slip through your fingers.” Leia clearly understood what I had not realized; the galaxy was already simmering with discontent.
From Palpatine’s perspective, then, this makes the development of the Death Star a lot more logical. He always intended to rule by fear, and he believed the overwhelming show of force represented by the Death Star was necessary to cow the galaxy into submission. This latestStar Warstwist makes the Death Star a lot more logical - even if it was ultimately unsuccessful. I couldn’t be happier with this subtle change in the story.
