Spy x Familyis an endlessly entertaining series, but it depicts some fairly tortured characters due to their interactions with a world constantly in and out of strife amid a cold war. In the latest arc, one particularly persistent trend is highlighted forLoid Forger, aka Agent Twilight, as he occasionally lets slip his struggles keeping a level head on the mission.

While his mission is endearing andfans may want a happy ending for Loid, it seems his prodigious and steadfast dedication to the mission also makes this a difficult goal to achieve inSpy x Family.Loid’s motivation was to create a world in which children won’t feel the need to cry, spurred on largely by his harrowing experiences growing up in a Westalis ravaged by war. But even in the presence of a thoughtful and patient Yor, Loid has difficulty embracing peace, making a happy ending for his character difficult to conceive.

Spy x Family Uses Milestone Chapter to Break a Cycle of Hatred

Despite the comedic and charming overtones, Spy x Family still has several open wounds for its characters, but its latest chapter addresses one cycle.

Loid Can’t Experience the Happiness He Makes in Spy x Family

Even a Loving Family Doesn’t Stop Agent Twilight from Focusing on the Mission

Spy x Familychapter #103 centers on the Forger family who, during Anya’s school break, embark on an outing to find Belle, the escaped Nordic seal, with Loid consistently questioning the fuss. While the news covers Belle’s escape, he can’t help but wonder why they don’t have other topics to cover. When sitting with Yor while out with the family, he can’t sit still and enjoy the serene moment, and when they find Belle, he suspects she’s escaped from Project Apple,an experiment possibly connected to Donovan Desmond inSpy x Family.

It’s clear thateven in times of peace, Loid can’t let himself be happy. While this makes Loid an excellent agent for WISE, it also makes it ironically hard for him to enjoy the peace for which he strives. Ever since the WISE Arc laid out Loid’s horrifying trauma in chapter #62, it’s hard for fans to miss what Loid perceives to be at stake. Still, this restlessness is hard to bear; Loid should allow himself to be happy from time to time.

Spy x Family Sets Loid Up as a Tortured Hero

No Rest for the Wicked or WISE

With recent arcs more aggressively spelling out how quickly Westalis' operations in Ostania could turn sour and devolve into war, such as the Mole Hunt Arc or thwarting an assassination attempt on a Westalian diplomat, Loid’s position is crucial. He has the unenviable job of preventing any of this from reaching the public, which would cause tensions with Ostania to erupt into war.So, in a way, Loid must sacrifice the luxury of being happy and careless so that others may experience that sensation inSpy x Family.

While it’s uncertain whether Loid will truly ever allow himself to be happy, even at the end ofSpy x Family, that doesn’t stop him from sparking joy in the lives of the Forger family. Recent instances of this include awinter cabin getaway-turned-murder mystery in chapter #94and encouraging Anya to dance with Damian in chapter #96.
