Severancestar Dichen Lachman has addressed why she thinks Innie Gemma knew to trust Mark (Adam Scott) in the season 2 finale of Apple TV+’s hit psychological thriller. Lachman, who plays Gemma, the presumed-dead wife of Mark, takes center stage in the explosiveending ofSeveranceseason 2when Mark finally found and rescued her from Lumon’s Cold Harbor testing room. Although Gemma has no memory of her relationship with Mark, she chooses to escape with him anyway.

In an interview withTVLine,Lachman offered her own theory on why Gemma’s Innie made the leap of faith to follow Mark. She suggested that the severed versions of characters, or “Innies,” may hold onto more than they realize from their Outie lives — even if they can’t consciously access those memories. This, she believes, is why Cold Harbor Gemma trusted Mark despite not knowing who he was or what he meant to her. Read what she had to say below:

I think all of the Innies have parts of their Outies. There’s things that they feel that they don’t quite know how to explain… On some level, all of Gemma’s little Innies would probably have this instinct to trust Mark, even though they have no recollection of who he is or their relationship.

What Gemma’s Trust In Mark Means For Severance

Innies And Outties Have A Deeper Connection Than It Seems

The Cold Harbor room was Lumon’s final attempt to prove that one’s deepest memories could be erased. When Outtie Mark breaks into the testing room,Gemma is seen calmly dismantling a cribonce meant for the child they were desperately trying to have. The version of her Mark encountered is blank, and she has no recollection of their relationship. Yet, Gemma chooses to trust Mark when he asks her to leave with him. Even with Dr. Mauer’s voice warning her not to go, she follows Mark out of the room and reverts to her Outtie self.

Severance Season 2’s “See You At The Equator” Line & How It Foreshadowed Helly & Mark’s Fate

Mark and Helly share a quiet moment in MDR before the chaos begins in Severance season 2’s finale, but one line foreshadows the pair’s fate.

The moment was instrumental in Mark and Gemma’s long-anticipated reunion. In Cold Harbor, Gemma’s Innie didn’t know who Mark was, or even who she was, but some emotional residue told her she could trust him. It’s a quiet but undeniable suggestion that evenLumon’s most “successful” efforts can’t fully erase the deeper thread connecting Innies and Outties, who share a bond that memory alone doesn’t define. Cold Harbor Gemma’s trust in Mark may bethe first real proof that Lumon’s complete severance procedure isn’t as airtight as they believe.

Dichen Lachman’s theory that Innies retain fragments of their Outties now feels more tangible than ever. Gemma’s choice to trust Mark, even in her most emotionally erased state, suggeststhere are bonds severance can’t touch. And that, more than anything, may be Lumon’s undoing.

Yet, Innie Mark’s gut-wrenching decision to stay behind on the severed floor unraveled in seconds a reunion that was years in the making, and the consequences are poised to ripple well intoSeveranceseason 3. Gemma has become the company’s most dangerous variable. With Devon and Cobel as potential allies, she may be able to expose the truth behind the nefarious experiments inSeverance, even as she scrambles to save Mark, who’s more vulnerable than ever after sabotaging Cold Harbor.
