Sakamoto Daysdelivered a surprisingly fun episode with episode #6, leaving plenty to be excited about with episode #7 and beyond. While not the most exciting episode to be had, it was a notable improvement over the largely middling efforts of episode #5, and that, in and of itself, was something worth getting happy about.
InSakamoto Daysepisode #7, with the store losing too much money on damages from the constant assassination attempts, Sakamoto and Shin decide to enter a local paintball competition with a cash prize big enough to fix the store. It should have been an easy task with the two of them being former assassins, but trouble quickly arose whenanother assassin after Sakamoto’s head entered the competition and quickly turned it into a fight for their lives. It was another episode filled with great action and comedy, and episode #7 will surely be an even better follow-up.

Sakamoto Days Episode 5 Review: The Anime’s Lowest Point To Date
Sakamoto Days Episode 5 In Review
Overall,Sakamoto Daysepisode #5 was the most disappointing episode oftheSakamoto Daysanimeto date. As always, the animation was never outright bad, but with how much the manga is known for its kinetic fight choreography, animation that’s just average at best is nothing but a disservice to the source material. It’s especially bad for episode #5 because, as previously discussed,Sakamoto Days’ lackluster animation failed to properly convey the full impact of Sakamoto and Boiled’s fight, one of the best fights in the manga, and something like that is impossible to defend.
The only saving grace of episode #5 was in its narrative beats. Not only did episode #5 firmly set up the Order and the main antagonist Slur, but with Aoi already learning the truth about Sakamoto’s bounty, the story now won’t run the risk of feeling repetitive by constantly forcing everyone to lie to her, resulting in a far better dynamic, all around. The way thatSakamoto Daysepisode #5 advanced its story from a narrative perspective more than makes up for its visuals, but that can only keep working for so long.

What Happened In Sakamoto Days Episode 6?
Produced By TMS Entertainment; Directed By Yūki Taki & Tomoko Hiramuki
Sakamoto Daysepisode #6, “Heisuke Mashimo”, opened with the introduction of, appropriately enough, Heisuke Mashimo, another assassin after Sakamoto’s bounty, albeit one with a kind demeanor compared to the others. Heisuke, like all the other assassins, tracked down Sakamoto at the convenience store, but much to Shin’s surprise,Heisuke was stupid enough to believe that Sakamoto wasn’t the same Sakamoto he was after because of his massive weight gain. Heisuke, completely falling for the mistake, left the store feeling dejected that he missed out on yet another opportunity to make some money to support himself and his pet parrot, Piisuke.
The next day, Heisuke entered a local paintball competition to try and win a big cash prize, and since it was a team event, Sakamoto and Shin, who were also playing, took pity on Heisuke and let him join their team. Sakamoto and Shin were impressed by Heisuke’s impeccable skills with a rifle, and with him still oblivious about Sakamoto’s identity, it all seemed to be working out fine for everyone. Unfortunately,an intoxicated Lu made Heisuke realize that Sakamoto was, in fact, the same Sakamoto he was looking for, and Heisuke then turned his attention toward killing Sakamoto.

Heisuke quickly became a threat to Sakamoto and Shin, but thanks to his reluctance to kill them after befriending them, Shin and Sakamoto figured out Heisuke’s location, giving Sakamoto a chance to destroy Heisuke’s rifle with a rock. The fight was over, but at the end of it,Sakamoto complimented Heisuke on his skills as a marksman, something Heisuke had always fought for in a world where assassins were expected to have more than one skill, and Sakamoto still split the prize money with Heisuke, although because of the damaged caused by their fight, it ended up being basically nothing.
Sakamoto Days Makes Its Premise Even Sweeter With An Original Scene
A Rare Instance Of The Sakamoto Days Anime Improving The Manga
After the main conflict with Heisuke, episode #6 ended with a flashback scene further exploring how Sakamoto and Aoi became a couple. Picking up fromSakamoto Daysepisode #1with their first meeting, Aoi pointed out some blood on Sakamoto’s shirt, and before he could explain himself, Aoi ran off in what he assumed to be shock and fear. Sakamoto was about to leave dejected, but before he could,Aoi returned and revealed that she went to get Sakamoto a band-aid under the assumption that it was Sakamoto’s blood, and it was that kindness that helped kickstart their relationship.
The flashback with Sakamoto and Aoi was very heartwarming, and what makes it even better is how it was completely original to the anime. TheSakamoto Daysmanga doesn’t explore the early days of Sakamoto and Aoi’s relationship that much, sotheSakamoto Daysanime going so far as to create an original scene for Sakamoto and Aoi’s relationship shows a perfect understanding of why it’s so important to the story.Sakamoto Days' productionhas been a point of contention from day one, but moments like these show that it can be plenty great when the time calls for it.

Sakamoto Days Delivers A Nice Change Of Pace With Episode 6
A Surprisingly Fun Episode From Sakamoto Days
Despite episode #5’s poor performance, episode #6 was surprisingly entertaining. Not only was the action fairly consistent, at the very least never reaching the anime’s lowest lows, butHeisuke’s goofy and sympathetic personality makes him a great addition to theSakamoto Dayscast, and if he’s set to become a main character, then the already strong character writing is bound to get even better in the upcoming weeks. It was a nice episode to get after so much heavy action and story beats, in addition to inconsistent visuals, and hopefully,Sakamoto Dayswill continue to deliver more episodes like it.
Be sure to watchSakamoto Daysepisode #7 when it releases on Saturday, February 22.
