New Pennywise cosplay shows a new take on the classicItvillain. The killer clown was first introduced inStephen King’s novelItin 1986. Since then,Ithas gotten adaptationsin the form of Tim Curry’s two-part version in 1990 and the late 2010s filmsIt(2017) andIt Chapter Two(2019). In the latter duology, Pennywise is played by Bill Skarsgård. The 2017 version also featured a leading cast of Jaeden Martell, Finn Wolfhard, Sophia Lillis, Jeremy Ray Taylor, and Chosen Jacobs.
Now, the newItcosplay from @carmencabrera.12features a gender-swapped version of Pennywise. Check it out below:

In this cosplay, a young woman is dressed in the conventional Pennywise garb. Instead of a typical billowy clown suit, this cosplayer sports a form-fitting dress. As in the case of the typicalItoutfit, the dress is adorned with two puffy red spheres. The makeup is similar to that of the Skarsgård version, and she also holds Pennywise’s classic red balloon.
What This Cosplay Means For The It Franchise
Pennywise Has Become An Incredibly Popular Character
This cosplay exemplifies just how popular Pennywise has gotten in the cultural milieu. Once a King novel character,Pennywise is no longer just a creepy clown but a spooky icon in pop culture.Pennywise costumes are frequently seen on Halloween night, as people mimic the classic clown character. This cosplay is just one example of said costuming, showing a reimagining of the character in a gender-swapped version.
Pennywise the Monster Clown’s Origin In IT Explained
Pennywise the monster clown is the reason Stephen King’s IT terrifies readers and audiences. Here are the origins of the clown from IT explained.
This cosplay alsobegs whether the franchise will ever introduce a female Pennywise. As it stands, Pennywise has conventionally been played by a male actor. TheItIP is not done producing content, however, so there are more opportunitiesto get different interactions. Development is underway on aTV adaptation calledWelcome to Derry, which could be one way to expand the IP. As it stands,Skarsgård is set to returnfor the prequel series. Still, other female Pennywise-esque clowns could be incorporated.

Why A Female Pennywise Would Make Sense
Female Reboots Are All The Rage
The 21st century seems to be the era of female-led reboots(e.g.GhostbustersandOcean’s Eight), so it would not surprise me to see a female version of Pennywise sometime soon. In fact, female horror villains have also been popular in recent films, includingM3GANandAbigail, for instance. These trends in both horror and film could bleed their way into theItIP, potentially leading this kind of cosplay to reality in the coming years.
