On the 7th and 8th of September 2024, theYu-Gi-Oh!community celebrated the annual World Championship in Seattle, Washington, U.S.A. During that weekend, the world’s best duelists fought hard to be crowned as the indisputable champion. In the end, an American player namedRuben Penaranda rose to the top thanks to the deck of a belovedGXcharacter, Yubel.
Thanks to the new support released early that same year, the strategy used by Jaden’s partner and guardian went from being an extremely unreliable deck to the best in the world. After more than two decades, one of theYu-Gi-Oh! GXanime series’ characters have proven themselves as the strongest in the world.

Yubel Fiendsmith Has Become The Most Powerful Deck Of 2024 So Far
The New Support Pushed This Deck To The Top
Yubel is one ofYu-Gi-Oh! GX’s most iconic characters, due to their role as thedarkYu-Gi-Oh! GXseason 3’s main antagonistand later partnership with the protagonist Jaden. Their story is one of pain, as their young master abandoned them for being too overprotective and dangerous. Yubel’s desire for revenge was made present in their deck, which revolved around summoning themselves and their 2 evolutions to the field. Each of these monsters had the effect of preventing any damage to their user, destroying monsters who attacked them, and causing effect damage to the opponent.
Yu-Gi-Oh! Was Way More Ahead of its Time Than Fans Think, & One Iconic Character Proves It
Jaden’s protector and partner, Yubel, is still one of the most amazing depictions of a Non-Binary character in anime.
For many years, the Yubel deck remained one of the franchise’s weakest, as their most powerful monsters were difficult to summon and keep on the field for long. In 2024,to celebrate the 25th anniversary ofYu-Gi-Oh!, Konami released several booster packs to revitalize old strategies. Among them, a set of cards named Phantom Nightmare, based on Yubel, was introduced. This booster contained cards that helped the deck of this iconic villain overcome its weaknesses.

With a monster that could be special summoned when a direct attack was declared, two amazing fusions, and defensive spells and traps, Yubel had everything it needed to shine. The strategy became even stronger thanks to the Fiendsmith, a small but powerful archetype that would give the deck more opportunities to summon powerful monsters, defend from opponent’s effects, and search the deck for the cards they needed. Since the release of this new support, Yubel’s deck has continuously seen amazing competitive success, with Penaranda using it to become 2024’s best duelist in the entire world.
Yubel Is The First GX Character To Accomplish Such A Feat
Despite many strategies from the second series of theYu-Gi-Oh!anime being given support throughout the years, like theYu-Gi-Oh!fan-favorite Cyber Dragons, none has ever been this successful. Yubel’s deck is the first from this beloved series to not only remain as one of the game’s most powerful in many important events but also defeat all others during the world championship. After 20 years of waiting, a GX deck has finally become the best in the world.
Yu-Gi-Oh!is a game that is constantly evolving, with no deck remaining as the best for too long. As such, there is no telling what strategy may win 2025’s world championship. Most anime’s beloved and iconicYu-Gi-Oh!decks, like Dark Magician, could be just a couple of cards from taking the crown from Jaden’s guardian in the future.
