Nosferatuhas raked in some major award nominations despite a prominent snub earlier in the week. It is the latest horror movie fromThe Witch,The Lighthouse, andThe Northmandirector Robert Eggers, remaking the iconic 1922 German expressionist silent filmNosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. This is the latest of several remakes of the property, which itself is loosely adapted from the novelDraculaby Bram Stoker, a title that has also been adapted to the screen many times.

Horror movies were relatively well-represented in the nominations for the 2025 Golden Globes, which were announced on August 11, 2025. The nominated included one nomination forHeretic(a nod for Hugh Grant for Best Actor - Musical or Comedy) and five forThe Substance(Best Picture - Musical or Comedy, Best Actress - Musical or Comedy for Demi Moore, Best Supporting Actress for Margaret Qualley, Best Director, and Best Screenplay). However, theupcomingNosferatuwas snubbed entirely by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the group behind the event.

Nosferatu Earned Four Critics Choice Awards Nominations

It Is Competitive In Several Major Categories

Now,Nosferatu’s fortunes have been reversed following its major snub. Prior to being shut out of the2025 Golden Globes nominations, the most prominent award it had earned or been nominated for was an accolade for Best Cinematography from the National Board of Review. However, the movie’s prospects have taken a huge leap in the days following the HFPA’s announcement.

The National Board of Review honoredWickedas their Best Picture, somewhat increasing the buzzy movie’s Oscar hopes.

PerDeadline, the nominations for the Critics Choice Awards have now been announced, reversingNosferatu’s fortunes. The anticipated horror remake earned four nominations, namely Best Cinematography (for Jarin Blaschke), Best Production Design (for Craig Lathrop), Best Costume Design (for Linda Muir), and Best Hair and Makeup (for Traci Loader, Suzanne Stokes-Munton, and David White). Of the 45 movies that were nominated,Nosferatuhas tied withChallengersandGladiator IIas the movie with the 10th most nominations of the entire ceremony.

What This Means For Nosferatu

It Has Become A More Competitive Contender

While theNosferatucastwas snubbed by the Critics Choice Awards, the fact that it was nominated for four technical awards is an impressive achievement. In fact, it has proven to be a competitive title, landing nearly as many nominations as other awards season favoritesincludingSing SingandNickel Boys, both of which earned five Critics Choice Awards nominations apiece, as well asAnoraandThe Substance, which both have seven. The only movies to earn more than that are the Best Picture contendersThe Brutalist(9),Dune: Part Two(10),Emilia Pérez(10),Wicked(11), andConclave(11).

Nosferatufeatures a robust ensemble that includes Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, and Willem Dafoe.

This announcement could also mean good things for the Oscar chances of theNosferaturemake. Because the Golden Globes have more potential nominations than other awards due to many categories being split between the “Drama” and “Musical or Comedy” genres, the fact that the Eggers movie was recognized so many times on the Critics Choice Awards' more selective slatemay weight it even higher amid the overall awards season horror offerings(which also includeAbigailandBeetlejuice Beetlejuicein addition toHereticandThe Substance), potentially indicating that it will be appearing on Academy Awards ballots when the time comes.

Our Take On Nosferatu’s Critics Choice Award Nominations

Robert Eggers Could Break A Personal Record

These four Critics Choice Awards nominations forNosferatucould also indicate thatthis may be the best awards season yet for Robert Eggers. WhileThe Lighthousewas nominated for a Best Cinematography Oscar, becoming his first (and so far only) Academy Award-nominated movie, it was only nominated for two Critics Choice Awards. The Witchwas only nominated for one Critics Choice Award and his third movie,The Northman, received non nominations. Additionally, none of his movies have earned Golden Globe nominations, so these four Critics Choice nods could indicate a more robust path to success than his previous three features.
