The upcoming9-1-1spinoff may have already found its location according to a new report. From co-creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, the burgeoning small-screen franchise started in 2018 with its main installment based in Los Angeles. Starting on Fox,9-1-1transferred to ABCafter its original network pulled the plug on it. That said, its spinoff,9-1-1 Lone Starcontinues to be on Foxand will finish its run there after the current year. Admittedly, the cancellation remains divisive, but there’s a silver lining to it, as its end means the beginning of a new offshoot.

In a new report fromDeadline, citing anonymous sources, the next9-1-1franchise installment will be in Hawaii. Other states were considered to follow Los Angeles and Austin as the location of the next endeavor. Apparently, Las Vegas was a favorite. Most recently, however, the creators of the project are now more interested in establishing their next police procedural set in the9-1-1franchise in Hawaii. Despite this, however, the outlet notes some challenges for this to officially move forward, which includes the island being an expensive state to shoot in. ABC and Studio 20th Television have declined to comment.

Why A 9-1-1 Spinoff In Hawaii Is Exciting But Also Risky

Hawaii Is An Expensive Filming Location

Hawaii has been a popular procedural location for TV, with shows likeGilligan’s Island, bothHawaii Five-0s andMagnum P.I.as well asLost, using the island paradise as their backdrop. That being said, setting up production in Hawaii comes with a high cost.CBS just cancelledNCIS: Hawai’iafter just three seasons and a massive cliffhanger, supposedly due to cost-cutting. It’s worth noting that the youngest contemporaryNCISspinoff was doing great numbers, being the #12 most-watched non-sports program of the last TV cycle. Even with that performance, the network was compelled to pull the plug on it.

9-1-1 Season 8’s Secret Lone Star Crossover Just Makes Its Upcoming End More Disappointing

One 9-1-1: Lone Star actor makes a cameo in 9-1-1 season 8 that is exciting, but it makes the spinoff’s cancelation all the more frustrating.

Currently, Fox has the onlyshow on network TV that is set in Hawaii —Rescue Hi-Surf. Produced by John Wells Productions, Fox Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Television, it is somewhat similar toBaywatchin premise. Based on other9-1-1shows, however, it’s supposed next spinoff will expand on just responding to accidents and snafus on the beach, but also going to various emergencies throughout the island. This would allow it to showcase the rest of Hawaii’s beauty.

Production Cost Can Determine The Spinoff’s Future

Ultimately, a9-1-1spinoff set in Hawaii is exciting. It’s also accessible with Bobby and Athena in the flagshipseries, leading to crossovers. That said, I’m wondering how sustainable it can be, considering the production cost for shows filming on the island.Cancelling9-1-1: Lone Starafter season 5has already been met with backlash from viewers who are invested in its narrative. Perhaps, it would be better if the people behind the new offshoot focus on its long-term viability. While finding the perfect backdrop for a show is important, viewers will come if it has good stories.
