Reacherseason 2 surprisingly killed off one of its best characters, but theNeagleyspinoff will finally justify why the show made the bold storytelling decision. While Amazon’sReacherwill likely not end its run anytime soon, the show is also set to expand its universe with a spinoff series focusing on Frances Neagley. After appearing only in theending moments ofReacherseason 1, Maria Sten’s Neagley became one of the leads in the show’s season 2. As reports have confirmed, Neagley will also be a part ofReacherseason 3’s roster.

Since Neagley is the only recurring character in all threeReacherseasons, other than Jack Reacher himself, it is not surprising that she is getting her own spinoff series. Interestingly, even though theNeagley spinoff showwas only announced recently, Amazon’sReacherhas been setting up her series in more ways than one. The show’s second season not only gave a glimpse of what she does when she is not teaming up with Jack Reacher but also paved the way for her to lead her own show through one beloved character’s death.

Russo’s Reacher Season 2 Death Was Necessary For Neagley’s Character Development

Russo’s Death Brought Out A Different Side Of Her Characterization

Gaitano “Guy” Russo was constantly at odds with Jack Reacher inReacherseason 2 because the Alan Ritchson character could not help but suspect Guy was involved with Langston. However, Guy ultimately proves his loyalty by putting his life on the line to protect Jane and her daughter. After Russo gets shot and falls to the ground, Neagley is the first to approach and comfort him.Her otherwise stoic and calm demeanor breaks as she grabs Russo’s handand brings out her vulnerable side.

…Neagley’s final scene with Russo highlights how much she values relationships and also hints she has experienced the loss of a loved one in the past.

Neagley’s tear-jerking moment with Russo in his final moments develops her characterization in ways no other scene does. While Reacher season 2 does an incredible job of highlighting how Neagley can be as smart as Reacher (if not more) when it comes to solving crime, the show avoids exploring her emotional side in its initial moments. However, Neagley’s final scene with Russo highlights how much she values relationships and also hints she has experienced the loss of a loved one in the past. If it wasn’t for the scene, the idea of aNeagleyspinoff would not have been half as interesting.

Russo’s Death Shows The Big Difference Between Neagley & Reacher

It Proves Neagley Can Be Both Stoic & Vulnerable Unlike Reacher

Even when his brother passes away inReacherseason 1,Alan Ritchson’s Jack Reacherinternalizes his emotions because he is hardwired to suppress his feelings and maintains a stoic facade at all times. Almost throughoutReacherseason 2’s runtime, Neagley seems no different. She almost comes off as a female Jack Reacherbecause of her rough demeanor and ability to stay calm and collected even during grave situations.

Lee Child’s Jack Reacher book series consistently offers incredibly thrilling page-turners, though not every book attains masterpiece status.

However, her brief moment with Russo inReacherseason 2 highlights how she is not like Jack Reacher. Even though she maintains a tough exterior almost throughout the season, she does not shy away from being vulnerable when Russo needs her.Reacherseason 2’s endingdraws a similar distinction between the two characters, showing how Neagley expresses herself by reminding Reacher that she and his former teammembers from the 110th Special Investigation Unitare his family, while Reacher agrees but says nothing.
