This article mentions suicide and self-harm.
IfMr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie2happens, the sequel can do many things that the firstMonkfilm didn’t deliver. Despite its title,Mr. Monk’s Last Casewas not a definitive ending for Adrian Monk’s character. In fact, the reunion set up aMonkmovie sequelin a lot of ways. It must be noted thatMonk 2has not been confirmed yet, but there are enough stories and characters that a sequel could revisit.Monk’s procedural nature means it shouldn’t be difficult to bring Adrian back for another adventure after all.

Monkwas one of themost popular TV shows of the early 2000sand ran for eight seasons. Led by Tony Shalhoub, thecast ofMonkreunited in 2020 for a web episode about the pandemic before assembling again for the feature film. With so many TV shows returning for revivals or sequels, the possibility ofMonk 2happening should not be ruled out. However, the sequel would have to justify its existence since the firstMonkmovie was called “Mr. Monk’s Last Case” and deliver things that neither the show nor the feature film did.
8Monk 2 Must Give Us A Lot Of Scenes Between Adrian And Watson
Monk Has Finally Found His Watson
Considering that Adrian Monk was obviouslyinspired by Sherlock Holmes, we can say that both Sharona and Natalie were his “Watson.” However, at the end ofMr. Monk’s Last Case, Adrian officially got his own Watson – a dog. When investigating the murder of Molly’s fiancé, Adrian saw himself in a dog shelter that was somehow connected to the case.Natalie noticed that there was a dog that was“just like”Monkbecause he wouldn’t fit in with the rest of the puppies.
At the end of the movie, Monk comes home to that same dog now walking around the house. He also finds a note from Natalie saying she was the one who left the dog there and even gave him a nametag that said “Watson.” The idea ofAdrian Monk taking care of a dogsounds way too fun not to happen on screen, especially because it seems likeWatson will now be Monk’s companion for life.

7Ambrose Monk Should Be In The Monk Movie Sequel
Adrian And Ambrose Should Reunite Onscreen
John Turturro’s Ambrose Monkwas one of the best characters on the show despite only appearing in three episodes. Adrian’s older brother shared a lot of similarities with the show’s titular character, although neither of them liked to admit it. Ambrose suffered from OCD like Adrian but also struggled with agoraphobia, which is why he hadn’t left the house for decades.Ambrose and Adrian had a complicated relationship, but their scenes together were always incredible.
John Turturro won an Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series Emmy in 2004 for his guest role inMonk.

Ambrose Monk did not appear inMr. Monk’s Last Case, but he was referenced in the movie. When Adrian is writing goodbye letters to friends and family while contemplating the idea of taking his own life, one of the letters says “To Ambrose.” The film doesn’t show the context of the letter, and it’s difficult to imagine what Adrian would have chosen as his final words to his brother. Regardless,aMonksequel would be the perfect opportunity to bring Turturro back as Ambrose.
6A New Monk Movie Wouldn’t Be Complete Without Sharona
Sharona Must Return If Monk 2 Happens
Bitty Schram leftMonkin season 3, after which Sharona would only return five years later for a special appearance in season 8. WhileSharona was not around for most ofMonk, she remained one of the show’s most important characters and a fan favorite. One of the biggest questions leading up to theMonkmovie was whether Sharona was going to be in it, but it was later confirmed that she would not be included.
Natalie first appeared inMonkseason 3, episode 10, “Mr. Monk and the Red Herring.”
Mr. Monk’s Last Casereferences Sharonaand even shows her in the opening sequence through a flashback fromtheMonkpilot. The movie establishes that Sharona, who is now married to Randy, was back home taking care of her grandchild and couldn’t be at the wedding. If aMonksequel happens, the franchise will have yet another chance to revisit Sharona, and it should take it. As great and nostalgic asMr. Monk’s Last Casewas, the reunion felt incomplete without Sharona. This is why she should be included in a potential sequel somehow.
5Monk 2 Must Show Adrian Working On The Police’s Cold File Cases
There Are Still A Lot Of Cases Left For Monk To Solve
Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie’s endingwas the perfect setup for a sequel. Adrian was retired at the start of the movie and was struggling financially. Both the pandemic and not being able to assist Molly with her wedding took a toll on Monk, which contributed to his suicidal thoughts throughout the film. However, at the end of the movie,Monk decides to go back to work.Earlier in the film, he was invited by the new Police Captain to stop by at any time and take a look at unsolved cases.
The police would refer to those cases as the“Monk files”– cases everyone had given up on already and could only be solved by someone like Monk. Adrian refuses the invitation at first, but the film ends with him deciding to resume his career after reminding himself of all the people he helped. Even if none of those murders is the main case featured in aMonksequel,it would be fun to have at least one montage in which Adrian would be solving many of those forgotten cases.
4Monk 2 Should Take Adrian To A Different Country
A Monk Adventure Overseas Would Be Very Fun
Even though getting anotherMonkfilm would be very exciting, the sequel would have to bring something different.Monkwas a very formulaic show, and many of the episodes felt the same. TheMonkfilm wasn’t that different from the show either, which is why a sequel should take Adrian’s character in a whole new direction.Having aMonkmovie set in another country could be a lot of funand lead to some hilarious situations.
7 Harsh Realities Of Rewatching Monk 15 Years After It Ended
It’s been 15 years since Monk ended, and rewatching it in 2024 reviews some interesting truths about the Tony Shalhoubd-led detective show.
One of the biggest differences betweenMr. Monk’s Last Caseand the original show was the budget the former had compared to the latter.TheMonkfilm was shot in a few different locations and felt bigger than the show, which is why a sequel should continue this trend and take the story overseas. Not only would it make the sequel feel naturally bigger than its predecessor, but it would also make sure thatMonk 2would be tonetically different from the first movie.
3A New Monk Film Can’t Forget Adrian’s Mental Health
Adrian Was In A Better Place At The End Of The Movie
Given howmuch ofMr. Monk’s Last Casewas about Adrian’s mental healthand how he had been dealing with the effects of the pandemic, a sequel can’t ignore this part of the character.Monkwas a pioneer in dealing with mental health on a major network TV show without stigmatizing it, and it was no different for the film. In fact,Mr. Monk’s Last Casedealt with it in a way that not even the show did by showing that Adrian was struggling so much that he considered taking his own life.
Mr. Monk’s Last Case’s story was heavy, but it ended on an uplifting note as Adrian realized all the good he had done in the world, and how important he was not only to those around him but to all the strangers he could help. This is somethingMonk 2could continue showing, especially if Adrian is no longer retired. Monk’s OCD symptoms got worse after the pandemic, but the film’s ending suggested he was back on a path of recovery.
2Monk 2 Needs A Better Case Than The One In Mr. Monk’s Last Case
Mr. Monk’s “Last Case” Was Underhelming
Arguablythe worst thing aboutMr. Monk’s Last Casewas the case itself. After almost 15 years without seeing Adrian Monk using his detective skills, the fact that the movie’s case was so simple was disappointing. Granted, the emotional stakes of the movie were very high since Monk was dealing with family. Still, there was no catch or impossible puzzle to be solved – everything was obvious from the opening sequence. Rick Eden was guilty, and it shouldn’t have taken too long for Monk to prove it.
Stanley Tucci’s Emmy-Winning Monk Episode Made Tony Shalhoub’s Performance Somehow Even More Impressive
Stanely Tucci guest starred in one of the best Monk episodes, and his character somehow made Tony Shalhoub’s performance even more impressive.
A newMonkmovie needs to have a case that lives up toMonk’s best episodes. This doesn’t mean thatMonk 2can’t make its killer obvious – in fact, a lot ofMonkepisodeswould reveal the killer in the cold open. However, there has to be something different about the case, something that makes it worth it to follow in a 90-minute movie.Adrian Monk has solved over 100 cases in his career, and for something to be a challenge for him, it must be a very complicated case full of twists and turns.
1Monk 2 Should Give Adrian A Definitive Ending
Monk Doesn’t Need Too Many Sequels
Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Moviedidn’t end on a cliffhanger, but it did leave the door open for a sequel. From Monk getting back to work to the dog, the film planted some seeds that could lead to a sequel. However, if a second movie doesn’t happen, those elements will not be paid off. At a time when franchises come and go depending on their numbers, it’s important for stories to have definitive conclusions. This is why, ifMonk 2happens, it should give Adrian Monk a nice, definitive ending.
Monk’s series finale was virtually perfect and gave Adrian the ending he deserved.Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie“ruined” that happy ending to show that Adrian would still have other challenges to face. Still, it would be nice to endMonkon a high note again with a film that gives the character another happy, fulfilling sendoff.
