Peanuts’Charlie Brown may have girl trouble, but he does not have a shortage of girls who have a crush on him. Specifically, one of his friends has heart eyes for good old Charlie Brown: Peppermint Patty. While Peppermint Patty may have some competition for Charlie Brown’s affection from her best friend Marcie, she has had countless storylines about her feelings for the round-headed kid.
As much asPeppermint Patty likes her pal Chuckand tries to see what he thinks of her, she hesitates to ever share her true feelings for him. The only person who knows of Peppermint Patty’s massive crush on Charlie Brown is Marcie. Nevertheless, her coyness about her love for Charlie Brown does not stop her from trying to control interactions with him so that they work out in her favor.

Lonely at camp, Marcie writes to Charlie Brown back home, but he does not answer back at first - until Sally threatens to beat him up if he does not respond to Marcie. She then gets a letter from him, making Peppermint Patty get in on this letter from Charlie Brown business… except she never receives one from him. Sitting out by the water alone, Marcie joins Peppermint Patty, who looks very down in the dumps.
Peppermint Patty is mad at Marcie because she got a letter from Charlie Brown while she received zilch from the round-headed kid. She proceeds to takes her pain out on Marcie. It is even more frustrating for Peppermint Patty since she was the one who was empathetic to her friend when she was the one who was feeling lonely. Being a great friend,Marcie offers to let Peppermint Patty push her into the lakeif it will make her feel better.

11"What Letter?"

As usual, Peppermint Patty and Marcie think heavily about Charlie Brown while they are at camp, taking turns betweengoing on summer hikesand writing heartfelt letters to Charlie Brown. When Marcie and Peppermint Patty are back home from camp, trouble for Charlie Brown starts again. The dynamic duo come to his door, where Peppermint Patty asks him if he liked the letter from her.

Wondering out loud if she will be beautiful when she is a senior in high school, Peppermint Patty decides that if she knew for sure that she would be beautiful, she would have graduation pictures of herself taken.Peppermint Patty tries to suss out if Charlie Brown has feelings for herby asking if he would put her graduation picture on his piano for display.
In response, Charlie Brown answers very practically that he does not have a piano. Not too thrilled with his answer, she says that she can always count on Charlie Brown to give a wishy-washy answer. Senior pictures are often a rite of passage in the United States for high school seniors, something Peppermint Patty uses to gauge any feelings Charlie Brown may have for her.

At the start of the new year,Peppermint Patty and Marcie take itupon themselves to ask Charlie Brown, once and for all, who he likes better. They first try it over the phone, but their strategy does not get them any results. Consequently, they move to Plan B where Marcie and Peppermint Patty go to his house to confront Charlie Brown and demand he make a decision about whether he likes Marcie or Peppermint Patty better.

Peppermint Patty’s grades keep her in summer school and prevent her from going to campwith Marcie and Charlie Brown. It is bad enough that she has to spend her summer at school, but the fact that Marcie is all alone with Charlie Brown does not help matters. She actually gets so jealous that she commiserates to Snoopy about it. Peppermint Patty calls Marcie at camp and asks how she and Charlie Brown are doing.
Marcie decides to mess with her best bud a littleand acts as if Charlie Brown is holding her hand before eventually letting Peppermint Patty know that she was just kidding. It is a little too late though, because Peppermint Patty has already stressed out immensely, with her biting down on the phone out of envious rage.

Charlie Brown is a patient in the hospital in a storyline that sees many of his pals worried about him… in their own strange ways. Two people worry about Charlie Brown the most: Peppermint Patty and Marcie. They even try to visit him in the hospital, but they get stopped because they are too young. Regardless of being blocked from entry, they sit out on a bench in front of the hospital, thinking that it will help him get better.

Peppermint Patty instantly gets mad about Marcie’s accusation and reasons that she just wants to meet Little Red Haired Girl because Charlie Brown is always talking about her.
Knowing her friend too well, Marcie thinks that Peppermint Patty is going to punch Little Red Haired Girl, but Marcie’s accusations drive Patty nuts - to the point that she plans to slug Marcie if she continues. The storyline captured in part by this comic strip leads to a bit of a sad but revealing moment for Peppermint Patty, who pours her heart out toLinusabout why she was so obsessed with seeing the Little Red Haired girl: because she is terribly insecure about her own looks.

Peppermint Patty asks Charlie Brown to go to the carnival with her, acting like he was her last resort. However, fans of Peppermint Patty know thatCharlie Brown was the only person she wanted to go with(well, maybe besides Marcie). Things do not get off to a great start when Charlie Brown gets sick just going through the turnstiles, but things get better… as much as things can when it comes to Charlie Brown, at least.
The storyline of Peppermint Patty and Charlie Brown at the carnival was adapted into a part of the animated movieSnoopy Come Home.

When Patty tries to get Charlie Brown to win her a stuffed panda in a dart-throwing carnival game, Charlie Brown is sure that she would have a better chance of winning it than him. However, she won’t hear it and gives him the darts to throw, ecstatic that when she handed him the darts, their hands touched.

Peppermint Patty and Marcie call Charlie Brown from camp, where Peppermint Patty tries to brag that many cute boys think very highly of them. Annoyed that Charlie Brown does not have any response to this information, especially not the response the girls intended,Peppermint Patty gives up the charade and just tells Charlie Brown to get jealouslike they wanted him to from the beginning.
Calling Charlie Brown from camp seems to bring Marcie and Peppermint Patty more annoyance and frustration than good feelings, so the fact that they continue to do so remains a mystery to everyone. Regardless, the tactic fails, and Peppermint Patty tries to go about things in a harder way, namely telling Marcie to write him a letter that says they don’t care if they ever see him again.

Peppermint Patty and Charlie Brown have had some deep conversations at their spot under the tree with their backs to each other. In their special place,Peppermint Patty questions if Charlie Brown’s feelings are more than hers, to which he responds with the same exact question, just aimed at her. Not happy with having her question just shot back at her, Peppermint Patty insists on not playing lovers' games with each other.

Charlie Brown rarely gives Peppermint Patty a concrete answer, with this comic strip just one of many examples of his wishy-washy nature when it comes to her and her feelings. This is not be Peppermint Patty’s last attempt to figure out Charlie Brown’s feelings towards her, but it is a memorable attempt.
