American Primeval Review: This Pulse-Pounding Western’s Grim Events Triumph Over Characters I Couldn’t Fully Invest In
American Primeval is a Western miniseries with plenty of grit and action to make up for its character faults.
Shea Whigham’s Jim Bridger is one of the most importantcharacters inAmerican Primeval, and as it turns out, the series portrays him fairly accurately. Although the Netflix show doesn’t delve into his history all that much, Bridger’s popularity in Fort Bridger and his tough and realist demeanor are incredibly accurate to the real-life figure.American Primevalprobably should have made Bridger seem more talented, however, as the series mostly sees him sitting around Fort Bridger, with it failing to show the extent of his survivalist and linguistic knowledge.

As it turns out, Fort Bridger really was burned down by the Mormons asdepicted inAmerican Primeval. However, the background of how this happened is slightly different. In real life, the Mormons had bought Fort Bridger in 1855, two years beforeAmerican Primevaltook place. However, Bridger denied their ownership, with the Mormons claiming that they bought it from Fort Bridger co-founder Louis Vasquez. After this was sorted out, Jim Bridger agreed to let the U.S. Army use Fort Bridger as an outpost in 1857 during the Utah War.
