A new Marvel supervillain’s introduction teased by theThunderboltstrailers confirms that theMCU’s New York is impossible to live in.Thunderbolts' promotional material has started to tease the debut of one of the MCU’s most powerful characters,Lewis Pullman’s Bob a.k.a. the nearly invincible Sentry, who seems to turn against the Thunderbolts when instigated by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Sentry’s immense physical power and wide array of abilities make him practically untouchable by any other character.
None ofThunderbolts*' main anti-heroesare nearly as strong, fast, or durable as Sentry. They also lack abilities that could negate or oppose Sentry’s. Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, US Agent, Red Guardian, and Taskmaster are all their own brand of super soldier, making Ghost the most likely Thunderbolt to escape Sentry’s attacks using her phasing powers. Still, Ghost also doesn’t have any special ability that could singlehandedly affect Sentry. In short,the scale is tipped against the Thunderbolts.

The Void’s attack from theThunderbolts*trailer appears to take place at the end of the movie, where the Thunderbolts will probably fight Sentry outside Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s headquarters, right outside Grand Central Station.TheThunderbolts*trailer also features a shot at the New York skyline, covered in a deep shadow that seems to come from Sentry’s Void powers.

Hulk and the Abomination used Harlem as their battlefield, Loki chose Manhattan as the epicenter of his alien invasion, Vulture crashed a plane on Coney Island, the Black Order landed in Greenwich Village, the Battle of Earth took place in upstate New York, and Spider-Man’s multiversal battle almost destroyed the Statue of Liberty — just to name a few.

Even in a universe as outlandish as the MCU’s Earth-616, it makes little sense for any regular human to live in or around New York. As mundane as superhero battles may be at this point, having to deal with the daily danger of becoming a supervillain’s next victim isn’t realistic at all. And while the MCU is unlikely to spend entire movies trying to fix this issue, New Yorkers' reactions to their city’s many superhero battles may be a valuable source of storytelling material for certain movies and shows. Otherwise, the franchise risks portraying regular citizens as careless cannon fodder for supervillains.
