Even though I love the fact thatStar Trek: Prodigywas quite obviously made as a soft legacy sequel toStar Trek: Voyager, I still really want Kate Mulgrew’s Admiral Janeway and her former crew to return in a different kind of project.Pretty much every member of the Voyager crew has been promotedinStar Trekcanon since they returned to Earth, and the franchise’s modern era has paid a lot of attention toStar Trek: Voyagercharacters too. However, there’s aVoyagersequel other thanProdigyI am waiting eagerly for, although I’m aware it may never happen.

TheStar Trektimelinehas been very kind toVoyager, allowing characters to return inStar Trek: Lower DecksandStar Trek: Picardas well asStar Trek: Prodigy. The almost-complete reunion has been pretty piecemeal so far, and nothing like the coming together ofStar Trek: The Next Generation’s original castin 2023’sStar Trek: Picardseason 3. I’m still hopeful thatStar Trek: Voyagerwill get the same treatment.

Why A Live-Action Star Trek: Voyager Reunion Should Still Happen Despite Prodigy

A proper Voyager reunion wouldn’t need to split focus between new and old characters like Prodigy

TheStar Trek: Prodigycastbeing so dense withStar Trek: Voyagerstars is one of the biggest reasons why I love the show. That being said, I’d prefer to see the entire crew enjoy a live-action reunion. Realistically, I know something like theTNGreunion inStar Trek: Picardis a bit of a stretch forVoyager, but announcing something like a one-off streaming movie on Paramount+ would have a lot ofVoyagerfans waiting impatiently. Sadly,I think the failure ofStar Trek: Section 31has probably made the platform a little hesitantto make another straight-to-streaming movie.

A live-actionVoyagermovie would make more sense to take place after the end ofStar Trek: Picardseason 3, early in the 25th century.

Star Trek: Prodigywouldn’t need to end for aVoyagermovie to happen, nor has the existence of the animated show made the latter option less likely. The commitment to voicing an animated character is far less than a live-action movie would take, plus the actors are now too old to physically reprise their roles during theProdigyera, which is just five years after the USS Voyager’s return to Earth. So, a live-actionVoyagermovie would make more sense to take place after theend ofStar Trek: Picardseason 3, early in the 25th century.

Voyager has become more beloved in the modern era

Star Trek: The Next Generationwas a huge hit pretty much as soon as it debuted in 1987, and it remains very popular today. It was followed byStar Trek: Deep Space Nine, which also did well, but its popularity plateaued early on. WhenStar Trek: Voyagerarrived in 1995, it fell a little flat, and although it had a fan base, it never reached the height of the other franchise installments while on the air. In the decades that have passed sinceStar Trek: Voyagerended, the show has grown to be far more well-received.

I Never Realized How Much Star Trek: Voyager’s Doctor Changed After Kes' Exit

The Doctor’s arc throughout Star Trek: Voyager hits a few fascinating milestones, and one of his biggest changes comes from Kes' exit in season 4.

The advent of streaming services has brought the show to new audiences, and for whatever reason, it has resonated far more with following generations. So, a reunion movie makes far more sense than it had been made immediately after the show ended, as happened withStar Trek: The Next Generation.Star Trek Voyager’s unexpected increase in popularity has been reflected in tributes to the show and returning characters in the modern era, such as the strongVoyagercontingent inStar Trek: Prodigy.

Cast

In this sci-fi series, the starship Voyager becomes stranded in the Delta Quadrant, 70,000 light-years from Earth. The diverse crew, led by Captain Janeway, embarks on a perilous journey home, encountering unfamiliar species and challenges while adhering to Federation principles in uncharted space.

Star Trek: Prodigy

Star Trek: Prodigy is the first TV series in the Star Trek franchise marketed toward children, and one of the few animated series in the franchise. The story follows a group of young aliens who find a stolen Starfleet ship and use it to escape from the Tars Lamora prison colony where they are all held captive. Working together with the help of a holographic Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), the new crew of the USS Protostar must find their way back to the Alpha Quadrant to warn the Federation of the deadly threat that is pursuing them.
