I’m very excited about whatStar Warshas in store forLuke Skywalker, including the chance to see one of his greatest canon moments in the wake of the original trilogy. Luke’s exploits during theBattle of Jakkuhave been teased in pastStar Warsprojects. However, fans will finally get to see the full extent of the Jedi Knight’s role during the Empire’s last stand against the Rebellion.

Having concluded its canonicalStar WarsandDarth Vaderseries set betweenEmpire Strikes BackandReturn of the Jedi, Marvel Comics is now jumping forward to the Battle of Endor’s fallout witha new trilogy of stories covering the Battle of Jakku. Jakku was the final conflict between the Empire before its surrender to the New Republic and its subsequent Imperial remnants scattering across the galaxy. However, the battle itself has never been definitively revealed in full outside more unique retellings and POVs. As such,I’m hopeful this upcoming trilogy will confirm what was likely one of Luke Skywalker’s coolest moments.

According To Star Wars Myth and Legend

Despite being such a significant battle in theStar Warstimeline, the Battle of Jakku has only been shown from specific angles, such as the particular roles played by the New Republic’s Nora Wexley from theAftermathtrilogy of novels by Chuck Wendig, or from the reformed Imperial Special Forces commando turned New Republic agentIden VersioinBattlefront II’sstory campaign. However, Ken Liu’sThe Legends of Luke Skywalkerin 2017 did tease Luke Skywalker’s role during Jakku.

A collection of stories, the tales featured inThe Legends of Luke Skywalkerwere framed as secondhand myths rather than fully true accounts, having been told by deckhands on a cargo ship during theNew Republic Era. To that end,it’s been strongly suggested in one tale that Luke Skywalker brought down one (if not more) of the Imperial Star Destroyers during the Battle of Jakku, the same ones Rey would scavenge years later at the beginning ofThe Force Awakens. However, the tale’s status as legend even in the canon means the specific details about Luke’s role have remained scarce (until now).

I Can’t Wait To See The True Story At Last

What Was Luke’s True Role During The Rebellion and Empire’s Final Battle?

Now,Marvel’s upcoming Jakku trilogy is perfectly primed to reveal not only what Luke Skywalker was doing during this key battle, but also what was going on with the rest of the Rebellion’s biggest heroes: Leia Organa, Lando Calrissian, Han Solo, and Chewbacca. Beginning with October’sStar Wars: Battle of Jakku — Insurgency Rising, it’s already been confirmed that the heroes will be facing off with a new Imperial faction known as the “Defiant Imperial”. Luke in particular will also take onthe dark side cult known as The Acolytes of the Beyond(who first debuted in theAftermathtrilogy).

As such, I’m very hopeful we’ll finally see Luke face off with an Imperial Star Destroyer. That said, perhaps it’s too much to hope that Luke might even bring one down using the Force as was seen with Legends' Starkiller in the oldForce Unleashedgames. At any rate, the full potential of these upcoming Jakku comics for Luke Skywalker and theStar Warscanon has me very excited.

Luke Skywalker

The son of Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala, Luke was brought up on the desert planet Tatooine. Initially mentored by Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke fired the fateful shot that destroyed the Death Star, and he became a rebel hero. Despite the fears of Obi-Wan and Yoda, Luke’s faith in his father was proved well-founded when Vader returned to the light. With the Emperor defeated, Luke dedicated himself to bringing back the Jedi; his first attempt ended in tragedy due to Palpatine’s manipulations, but Luke’s legacy lives on in Rey.
