Warning: Contains spoilers for Chainsaw Man chapter #193.One major criticism people have had aboutChainsaw Manpart 2 has been how repetitive Denji’s character has been. While Denji should have long since learned to value himself and not be so obsessed with sex, nearly every arc has him going through a cycle of lamenting his obsessive nature before quickly falling back into his old patterns, and to many, it’s made the manga tiresome to read.

The repetitiveness of Denji’s character arc has been a major criticism ofChainsaw Manpart 2, and the latest chapters aren’t helping much with that. AfterDenji learned the truth about Asa and Yoru, it was later made clear that Denji was sticking with Yoru out of desperation, butChainsaw Manchapter #192 ending with Yoru sitting on Denji’s lap still showed that sex would remain a prominent factor. That was taken even further with chapter #193, asChainsaw Manchapter #193 sets Denji up to repeat his worst mistake, despite how bad it would be for the story.

Chainsaw Man Shows That Denji Hasn’t Learned Anything From Part 1

Denji Is About To Repeat His Biggest Mistake

Chainsaw Manchapter #193 was largely dedicated to laying out where Denji stands with Asa and Yoru, with Yoru not only stating that she liked seeing Denji looking so pitiful, but that she and Asa had feelings for him, with that making Denji happy to the point of tears. Yoru then made out with Denji for a bit, and following that,Chainsaw Manchapter #193 ended with Yoru telling Denji she’d have sex with him if he killed the Death Devil, with his other option being to let Yoru turn him into a weapon so she could do it herself.

Denji’s situation with Yoru has always had similarities with Makima’s manipulations, and things escalating to the point that Yoru is promising Denji sex to manipulate him sells that even further. That would be bad on its own, but the fact that Denji is so quick to fall for it after everything he’s been through makes it even worse, asDenji letting Yoru manipulate him for the promise of sex shows that he’s learned nothing from everything Makima put him through. Chapter #193 ending without Denji’s response means he might say no, but considering the manga’s usual patterns, that seems unlikely.

Chainsaw Man’s Latest Chapter Highlights The Biggest Problem With Part 2

Why Chainsaw Man Part 2 Has Been So Contentious

One problem withChainsaw Manpart 2 that’s hard to ignore is how much it often fails to measure up to part 1, with part 2 often lacking the emotional core that made part 1 so balanced and the action, aside from a few fights, generally being a step down in quality, as well. Now, withChainsaw Manpart 2 repeating part 1’s premiseon such a basic level,Chainsaw Man’s latest development emphasizes the idea that part 1 is struggling to do anything different from part 2 in a meaningful way, and that’s only bad for the series.

The fact that chapter #193 ended on that sort of cliffhanger leaves room for Denji to do something unexpected and move the story in a different direction, but chapter #193 also makes a point about Denji being at such a low point that he’s willing to go along with anything Yoru wants, soChainsaw Man, despite its recent cliffhanger, likely won’t allow Denji to move in anything but the most obvious direction. Ideally, that won’t be the case, but if it is, it would do nothing but emphasize how much of a mixed bagChainsaw Manpart 2 has been.
