Co-creator ofStar Wars: Skeleton CrewChris Ford spoke exclusively withScreen Rantabout whyStar Wars’next TV show’s place intheStar Warstimelineis perfect for the story.Skeleton Crewpremieres on Disney+ on December 3rd, 2024, and even though that date is just around the corner,Star Warshas keptdetails aboutSkeleton Crewlargely under wraps.Star Warshas confirmed that the show features a group of children lost in the galaxy, Jude Law plays a Force-sensitive character named Jod Na Nawood, and the show is set at some point inthe New Republic timeline.

Speaking to Joe Deckelmeier forScreen Rant,Skeleton Crewco-creator Chris Ford revealed that this era was intentionally chosen, but not for the reasons many may think. Ford explained:

Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), and Anakin Skywalker (Matt Lanter) all edited together in the Star Wars franchise

“Yeah, our story is a bit more of a standalone piece, but there are connections there. And for us, it felt really natural. …We were looking for a part in the whole Star Wars timeline when even kids could go get lost in the galaxy. If you’re in the High Republic time, you’re going to get scooped up by some hero Jedi in about five minutes flat. Basically, we were looking for that time period because it was a little more chaotic. The New Republic is there, but they’re not necessarily all-powerful yet, so there’s room for pirates and danger.”

Ford’s comments have fascinating implications not only for the story withinSkeleton Crewbut also for its connection to otherStar Warsstories.

What Ford’s Comments Mean About Star Wars: Skeleton Crew

Skeleton Crew’s Connections To Other Star Wars Shows Won’t Be Paramount

AlthoughSkeleton Crewwill share an era with many ofStar Wars’best TV shows, includingThe MandalorianandAhsoka, it seems the show won’t be heavily connected to those other characters or stories. Instead, Ford’s comments suggest thatthe New Republic era was chosen forSkeleton Crewbecause it means the story can have a lot more wiggle room. Many had expected that, especially because of its place in theStar Warstimeline,Skeleton Crewwould have a direct relationship with otherStar Warsmovies and TV shows—now, it seems that may not be the case.

Ultimately, this is good news. It’s safe to assume there will be the occasional cameo or connection (for example, many are hoping to see Hondo Ohnaka inSkeleton Crew), butSkeleton Crewbeing a standalone will offer audiences something new and avoid a commonStar Warsproblem of prioritizing nostalgia over innovation. Even more exciting,it’s been a long time coming forStar Warsshows and movies to feature pirates prominently, which the franchise’s books have long done.

Our Take On Star Wars: Skeleton Crew

Skeleton Crew Truly Could Bring Something Brand-New To The Star Wars Screen

There have been many exciting additions toStar WarsTV shows recently, includingThe AcolyteandStar Wars: Tales of the Empire, which both came out this year. However, both ended up being fairly tied to otherStar Warsprojects. The Acolytestill focused primarily on the Jedi (although additions like the Witches of Brendok were very exciting), andTales of the Empirefurther explored the stories of Barriss Offee and Morgan Elsbeth, who were both returning characters.

Skeleton Crew, by contrast, has the opportunity to introduce numerous brand-new storylines and concepts. In fact, not only will the focus evidently be on pirates, at least in part, but also, Jude Law’s character increasingly seems like he may not be a Jedi after all. This raises exciting questions about who—or what—he could be. With just a few more weeks to go,Star Wars: Skeleton Crewis only becoming even more intriguing.
