2025 is giving us two of gaming’s most hyped launches in recent memory:Grand Theft Auto 6and the Nintendo Switch 2. While these will independently be exciting releases, their proximity to one another did make me wonder if there’s any possibility we could seeGTA 6getting a Switch 2 version. Although the timing would be somewhat perfect, I’m not entirely convinced we’ll be playing the newGTAon Nintendo’s hotly anticipated new system.
Part of the reasonI’m not entirely confident about the Switch 2 gettingGTA 6is simplythe system’s capabilities. While the Switch 2 is an impressive upgrade from the previous model, it still doesn’t reach the same heights as current-gen systems like the PlayStation 5.GTA 6also just doesn’t seem like the right fit for a Nintendo System, though that may not be as big of a concern for Nintendo as it once was.

What Games Can Switch 2 Run, & Could It Be Powerful Enough For GTA 6?
Switch 2 Can Run Elden Ring And Cyberpunk 2077, But How Well Is In Question
At first glance, some of thetitles coming to Switch 2could make aGTA 6release seem possible. After all, the console is getting big titles likeCyberpunk 2077andElden Ring, both of which have large maps and impressive visuals. However, it’s worth remembering that both of these games also came out on previous-generation consoles like the Xbox One and PS4, meaning the Switch 2 doesn’t have to be any more powerful than those to run these games.Analytics Insight’s analysis of the Switch 2’s specs also likens it more to the PS4 than the PS5.
Grand Theft Auto 6 Could Result In Several Major Game Delays
Reports from several major video game publishers suggest Grand Theft Auto 6’s release could prompt many studios to delay their projects.
It’s also worth noting that just because the Switch 2 is runningCyberpunk 2077,that doesn’t mean it’s doing so as well as other current-gen systems. According toBloomberg’s Jason Schreier onBluesky,Cyberpunk 2077is only running at 40 FPS on the Switch 2 while docked. Schreier doesn’t mention how it runs in handheld form, but I would imagine it is not any smoother.

GTA 6isn’t coming to previous-generation consoles, so my instinct would be that it is too much for them to handle. With the Switch 2 not measuring up to the current-gen systems, I’m not sure if it’s powerful enough to handleGTA 6. Even if it is, I don’t think we should expect it right away.
I Don’t Think GTA 6 Will Come To Switch 2 - Yet
GTA 6 Seems Like It Will Initially Be Released On Current-Gen Consoles Only
Like we’re seeing withElden Ring: Tarnished EditionandCyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Editionfor the Switch 2, it looks like developers are making dedicated versions of the game for the Switch hardware. I would imagine that, even if Rockstar is planning a Switch 2 version ofGTA 6, it’s probably on the back burner while they work on finishing up the version of the game that will be on other platforms.Even the PC release ofGTA 6isn’t Rockstar’s top priority right now, so I would be surprised if the Switch 2 version was.
We Might Be Playing “Grand Taking Ages 6” Before We’re Playing Grand Theft Auto 6 As New Game Listing Makes Waves On PlayStation Store
Some fans were so impatient for Grand Theft Auto 6, that they made a Grand Taking Ages 6, a parody game that was briefly on the PlayStation Store.
Additionally, mainlineGTAtitles haven’t been released on Nintendo consoles in the past, so it would make sense for Rockstar to focus on platforms they know their fans own. I’m also not sure what Nintendo’s stance is on releasing a game likeGTA 6given they’ve previously been seen as more of a family-friendly brand. While they did releaseGrand Theft Auto: Triology - The Definitive Editionon the Switch, and games likeElden RingandCyberpunk 2077are far from family-friendly, they were out for a while when they came to Nintendo and are less likely to cause controversy.
