Desmond Hart is perhaps the most intriguing character so far inDune: Prophecy, played by Travis Fimmel, who perfectly embodies the seasoned warrior. In addition to Fimmel, thecast ofDune: Prophecyincludes Emily Watson, Mark Strong, and Jodhi May. In just the first two episodes ofDune: Prophecy, Fimmel’s Desmond successfully persuades Strong and May’s characters, the Emperor and Empress of the Imperium, to side with him. On the other hand, Desmond also frightens Watson’sValya Harkonnen, the powerful Mother Superior of the Bene Gesserit.
InDune: Prophecyepisode 1, Desmond is introduced as a warrior who has done several tours on the desert planet Arrakis, the only survivor of a recent attack on the desert planet. However,it is later revealed that Desmond was swallowed by a sandworm following the attack. Somehow, Desmond managed to survive and reveals his mysterious new power at theend ofDune: Prophecyepisode 1. This power allowed him to burn Pruwet Richese (Charlie Hodson-Prior) and Reverend Mother Kasha (Jihae) using only his mind.

Did The Sandworm Let Desmond Hart Survive After Eating Him In Dune: Prophecy?
The Sandworm That Swallowed Desmond Hart Could Be Shai-Hulud
InDune: Prophecy, Emperor Corrino watches Desmond get swallowed by the sandworm in shock. For the Emperor, there is no conceivable way that Desmond could have survived being swallowed by a sandworm, but somehow he did. Based on Desmond’s new outlook on life and view of the Imperium, it seems like he was swallowed by the sandworm, and then reemerged as a new man. This raises the question of whether the sandworm let Desmond survive.
As Desmond has become the main opposition to Valya’s sisterhood, this theory suggests that the One God does not want the Bene Gesserit to rule over the Imperium.

InDune: Prophecyepisode 2, there is mention of Shai-Hulud. For Fremen, the term Shai-Hulud refers to the One God that created and governs the universe. Viewed by Fremen as a giant sandworm,it is possible that Desmond was swallowed by Shai-Hulud. If this is the case, then the One God allowed Desmond to live so that he could oppose the Bene Gesserit. As Desmond has become the main opposition to Valya’s sisterhood, this theory suggests that the One God does not want the Bene Gesserit to rule over the Imperium.
How Else Desmond Could Have Survived The Sandworm
Desmond Hart Could Be A Clone In Dune: Prophecy
However, it is possible that Desmond’s survival is not related to the Fremen’s belief in Shai-Hulud at all. Rather than a religious explanation for Desmond’s survival,Dune: Prophecymay instead provide a more technological one. For instance, Desmond could be a ghola inDune: Prophecy. In theDuneuniverse, gholas are artificial humans who are created from someone who has died. Therefore, the Desmond that viewers are watching inDune: Prophecymay essentially be a clone of the real man.
Why The Emperor Didn’t Have Desmond Hart Kill Duke Ferdinand Richese In Dune: Prophecy Episode 2
Dune: Prophecy episode 2’s ending sees Desmond Hart torturing Duke Ferdinand Richese with his power, but Javicco Corrino stops him from killing him.
Gholas can be created with just one cell from the original person. Additionally, inDunelore, gholas were almost exclusively created by the Bene Tleilax, a secret group of genetically altered humans. However, the Bene Gesserit also created at least one ghola of their own.Dune: Prophecymight be looking to explore the creation of gholas, which will lead to the answer of how Desmond Hart survived the sandworm.
