Things are finally looking up forthe Green Lantern Corpsafter one of it’s darkest chapters. And now that things are on an even keel again, it looks like romance is in one Lantern’s future.
InGreen Lantern Corps #1by Jeremy Adams, Morgan Hampton, Fernando Pasarin, and Oclair Albert,John Stewart ventures toTamaran to stop one of the new ‘Fractal Lanterns’, a Tamaraean who has accidentally manifested fear energy. Thankfully, Sinestro, now a Green Lantern once again, helps resolve the situation peacefully.
John and Sinestro return to Oa, where they suggest recruiting the Fractal Lanterns. Corps leader Jessica Cruz agrees, but she informs John that he’s been personally requested by the Thanagarians to assist with a political mission. Before Green Lantern knows what’s hit him, Hawkwoman arrives and gives him a playful tease.

Has She Brought Her Romantic Past with John With Her?
The animated series Justice League introduced the iconic team to an entire generation of fans. The members of the team were mostly faithful to the original line-up, but there were a few changes, such as Hawkgirl and John Stewart’s Green Lantern being founding members. During the show, Shayera struck up a romantic relationship with Green Lantern, with the two even having a child in the future. However, this wascounter to the Prime DC Universe’s canon, as both had been in relationships with other heroes, but never with one another.
While neither hero confirms they were ever a thing, Hawkwoman’s inclusion does lead one to believe that DC is at least hinting towards it. It also helps that co-writer Jeremy Adams has brought over things from other cartoons likeGreen Lantern: The Animated Series(such as the original character Razer) and canonized them. Plus, DC has been playing it fast and loose with canon, taking the approach that everything is canon since the end ofDark Nights: Death Metal, so fans shouldn’t be surprisedif DC reveals Green Lantern and Hawkwoman were canonically an item just like in the cartoon.

Green Lantern and Hawkwoman’s Relationship Just Might Live On
In the last few years, fans have seen a lot of cartoons from the 2000s and 2010s becoming canon.Teen Titans,Young Justice,Batman Beyond, and more have all had elements that have become a part of DC Universe history, which is understandable given that fans of these shows make up a large contingent of DC’s readership. And those fans know that Green Lantern and Hawkwoman dated inJustice League, so DC is capitalizing on the nostalgia of those who remember the bond that they shared.
Of course, it’s too early to tell how much of Justice League, if any, DC Comics is making canon when it comes to John and Shayera. It could be that they had some unseen adventure in the past, or maybe they did have an off-panel romance. Either way, DC is giving fans a fun wink and nod to their animated love affair. While it remains to be seen if these two were as close as they were inJustice League, it’ll be interesting to see what becomes of theseDC Universeheroes in the future.
