The showrunners ofFrasieroffer an update on season 3, teasing an appearance from a majorCheerscast member. The revival, which streams on Paramount+, recently closed out season 2 with a holiday episode that was big on emotional reunions, new romantic possibilities, and a deeper focus on the supporting cast. So far, however,Frasierseason 3has not been confirmed.

In an interview withTV Insider, co-showrunners and executive producers Chris Harris and Joe Cristalli opened up about the future and the possibility of a third installment is discussed. Cristalli shares his belief that the revival has improved since season 1, noting his optimism while stressing that hedoesn’t know if Paramount+ will renew the series:

Frasier season 2 finale

Cristalli:We don’t really know much. We haven’t heard anything, but I feel like [with] the quality of the episodes and how the characters have grown and the scripts and the writing staff and everyone… I would argue that [this season is] better than the first. I think we’ve only improved everything across the board. I think everyone’s done a great job. I think season 3 is only going to be more interesting and more fun and more exciting as we keep finding our groove.

So I think the show can only keep getting better until you hit season 7 and then you start phoning it in with Freddy learning how to swim episodes. But until then, I feel like we’re on a good trajectory right now, so I hope we get a chance to keep doing it. I feel like there’s a lot left to be said and to be written and to be seen. So we don’t know much. But I don’t want to speak for Chris. I know he’s perpetually pessimistic, but I’m optimistic that we could get season 3.

Frasier (2023)

Harris:I just can’t wait to get to that phoning it in part. That sounds great.

Cristalli:It’s going to be so good. We’re going to do that bottle episode where we show clips of season 1. Ah, I can’t wait for season seven.

Moving on to discuss whatFrasierseason 3 could consist of if it does happen, Cristalli shares that there wereplans to have Ted Danson reprise his seminalCheersrole as Sam Malone, mentioning that it could happen if the sitcom is renewed. The showrunner suggested otherCheerscharacters could also appear:

Cristalli:Not a lot of storylines. We have a story that we really like with Ted Danson hopefully reprising his Sam Malone character. But it’s really just more, as soon as we can get Ted, we’ll be able to hopefully get to revisit that because it’d be fun to see. We’ve talked a lot about stories with Frasier sort of re-engaging with some of the oldCheersfolks. The writers’ room came up with 30 episode ideas, so there’s a bunch we’d love to do, but you run out of time with 10. So we have a bunch of ideas hopefully that we’ll get to do in season 3.

What The Showrunner’s Comments Mean For Frasier

A Renewal Could Mean Big Things

By theend ofFrasierseason 2, the revival has embraced its ensemble nature. Although there are developments for the titular Dr. Crane and love interest Holly (Patricia Heaton), the emotional thrust of the finale falls on Frasier’s best friend Alan (Nicholas Lyndhurst) and his reunion with his daughter, which does not go well at first. It takes the involvement of Frasier’s son, Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott), to help right things.

Frasier Season 2 Finale Review: Revival’s Storytelling Shift Is A Risk That Has An Emotional Pay-Off

The Frasier revival ends its sophomore run with an unexpected shift in storytelling focus, although it remains true to the franchise’s core theme.

Thecast of theFrasierrevival, which also includes Toks Olagundoye, Jess Salgueiro, and Anders Keith, gets room to shine throughout the season. A renewal could help with the sitcom’s growing confidence, but the Ted Danson tease is also interesting since many have wondered about the connections betweenCheersand the revival. There’s also an added element, considering Danson’s recent comments about Grammer where the pair reunited on a podcast.

Our Take On Frasier Season 3

The Show Should Continue

The revival may never reach the significance of the original, considering the changed pop culture landscape and the realities of streaming. But it is worth it to seeFrasierseason 3 after Danson recently apologized to Grammer and looked back on their experiences duringCheers. It’d be interesting to have some of that brought to the screen. Given that Danson returned as Sam once before duringFrasier’s original run, it would be great to see him appear once more with a different perspective.
