Warning: This article contains spoilers for Agatha All Along episode 6, “Familiar By Thy Side.”
There have already been many references to the Scarlet Witch in Marvel Television’sAgatha All Alongseries, even though Wanda Maximoff hasn’t actually made an appearance.Agatha All Alongpremiered as the firstMCUspinoff from 2021’sWandaVision, picking up three years after the Scarlet Witch put a spell onKathryn Hahn’s Salem witch Agatha Harkness, trapping her as nosy neighbor Agnes O’Connor. As an almost-direct continuation ofWandaVision,Agatha All Alonghas been hugely impacted by the Scarlet Witch and her Multiverse Saga storyline.

Although it’s been heavily theorized that Elizabeth Olsen could return asWanda Maximoff inAgatha All Along, the Scarlet Witch is yet to reunite with Agatha Harkness. Even afterAgatha All Alongexplained the return of one of the Scarlet Witch’s sons,Billy Maximoff’s Wiccan, there’s no sign of Wanda coming back after her recent demise inDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Nevertheless,Agatha All Alonghas included many direct and indirect references to the Scarlet Witch, highlighting her influence over Agatha Harkness and her debut solo series.
14Wanda Maximoff May Have Been The Body In The Woods
The first part ofAgatha All Along’spremiere episode featured Agatha Harkness in her Agnes O’Connor guise, still under the Scarlet Witch’s spell. However, this spell had become distorted afterWanda Maximoff’s death inDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which twisted Agnes' world into a true crime-style narrative, which saw Detective O’Connor investigating a mysterious corpse in the woods, which was heavily-teased to be the body of Wanda Maximoff. Comments made betweenAgnes and John Collins' Herb referenced the events ofMultiverse of Madnessand teased the Scarlet Witch’s possible return.
Agnes O’Connor:“She is dead, though, isn’t she, Herb?”
Herb Feltman:“Oh, she’s really, most sincerely dead.”
Agnes O’Connor:“You never know.”
The body in the woods was said to have been"crushed"by"something big and heavy,“just as Wanda Maximoff was crushed beneath the rubble of Mount Wundagore’s Darkhold Castle. The body also had blackened fingers, just like both theScarlet Witch and Agatha Harknessdid following their corruption by the Darkhold.Agnes later described the body as being in her late 20s, 5'7” with green eyes and hair"the color of scarlet,“delivering perhaps the most overt connection between this body and the Scarlet Witch herself, though this whole sequence was later revealed to be imaginary.
13Wanda Maximoff’s Name Appeared On The Darkhold’s Toe-Tag
The only possession that officers find on the body in the woods inAgatha Harkness' true crime-style scenariois a mysterious library card for a book titled “Dialogue and Rhetoric: Known History of Learning and Debate” by Andrew Ugo.The initials of each word in the book title come together to spell Darkhold, while Andrew Ugo is an anagram of Wundagore, the name of the mountain where the Darkhold Castle was built. This means that the nine entries on the library card referenced previous owners of the Darkhold, including W. Maximoff.
It was the demonic entity Chthon who originally engraved his dark knowledge and spells on the walls of the Darkhold Castle on Mount Wundagore. It’s unclear who originally transcribed this into the physical Darkhold book in the MCU.
Wanda Maximoff stole the Darkhold from Agatha Harkness inWandaVision’sfinale, and she used the Book of the Damned to learn how to dream-walk into alternate realities. This enabled her to track down America Chavez across the multiverse and scheme to steal her power, hoping to reunite with her sons. Agatha Harkness owned the Darkhold prior to the Scarlet Witch for seemingly several centuries, though this hasn’t been confirmed. It’s unknown who the otherowners of the Darkholdwere.
12“That Witch Is Gone”
Agnes O’Connor’s investigation of the Scarlet Witch’s corpse eventually brought her to the morgue, where she first saw the name W. Maximoff, and began to free herself from Wanda Maximoff’s spell. This was with the help of Aubrey Plaza’s Rio Vidal, a mysterious original MCU character who has been heavily theorized to actually beMarvel Studios' interpretation of Lady Death. Vidal urges Agatha to claw her way out of the spell, stating that the Scarlet Witch is"gone,“and it’s about time she rediscovers exactly who she is.
This referred to Wanda Maximoff’s death inDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and may have supported the theory ofRio Vidal being Lady Deathearly on in the series. As Death, she would have knowledge of the Scarlet Witch being"gone,“while this may not actually be common knowledge yet. This created the opportunity for Agatha to rid herself of the spell, stripping down layer by layer through her themed costumes fromWandaVision, where she had appeared as Wanda and Vision’s nosy neighbor.
11Billy Maximoff Broke A Spell Cast By The Scarlet Witch
Rio Vidal wasn’t the only exciting new character introduced inAgatha All Alongepisode 1, asHeartstopperstarJoe Locke also made his debut as “Teen,” a mysterious goth teenager who has an intimate knowledge of witchcraft and Agatha Harkness. It was “Teen” who kick-started the release spell that allowed Agatha Harkness to rid herself of the Agnes persona and return to being Agatha. This demonstrated a huge amount of power, even though “Teen” suggested in episode 2 that he wanted to access the Witches' Road to gain power.
Agatha Harkness posited that he didn’t need more power since he already has “the goods to break a spell cast by the Scarlet Witch.“This ultimately made sense as “Teen” was outed asBilly Maximoff inAgatha All Alongepisode 5, as the soul of Wanda Maximoff’s son had made its way into the empty body of the recently-deceased William Kaplan after the Westview Hex was dismantled. This explains exactly how he was able to break the Scarlet Witch’s spell, as his connection to his own mother would have made this easier.
10Westview’s Residents Consider Wanda Maximoff An “Evil Witch”
Agatha All Along Episode 2, “Circle Sewn with Fate/Unlock Thy Hidden Gate”
After breaking free of the Scarlet Witch’s spell and agreeing to take “Teen” to the Witches' Road, Agatha Harkness finds herself outside the plot of land that belonged toWanda Maximoff and Vision duringWandaVision. This was the center of the Hex around Westview duringWandaVision, and the source of the collective trauma felt by the residents of Westview, which was evident in the graffiti drawn on the foundations of the Scarlet Witch’s house.Westview’s residents had named her an"evil witch"and crossed out an image of the Scarlet Witch’s crown.
The MCU Finally Admits Something Very Important About Scarlet Witch After Years Of Abuse
Scarlet Witch may eventually return to the MCU, but even before that, Marvel has finally admitted that she was never really a villain.
It wasn’t only the graffiti that proved how much pain the Scarlet Witch had caused the residents of sleepy Westview, New Jersey. John Collins explained that they tried not to talk about Wanda, which was backed up by Sharon Davis later on. InAgatha All Alongepisode 6,Billy Maximoff’s investigation also confirms that the Scarlet Witch’s actions in Westview had not been accurately reported, while survivors, including Evan Peters' Ralph Bohner, a.k.a. Randall, tried to avoid discussing it altogether, preferring to stay under the radar.
9Agatha Harkness Was Under The Influence Of Another
To access the Witches' Road, Agatha Harkness and “Teen” set out to build their own coven, with Patti LuPone’s Lilia Calderu being their first recruit. Initially, they tried to test Lilia’s skills as a Divination Witch, and while she initially came across as a fraud, she later showed her true strength as she read Agatha Harkness' reputation, and recounted the events of the past few years. Lilia noted that Agatha had been"under the influence of another,“referring to theScarlet Witch’s spell over Agatha Harknessthat trapped her in Westview.
Lilia Calderu:“You’ve been under the influence of another. Someone you hurt. They took your agency, for three years. It’s not the first time your witch kin betrayed you, but you survive, in a way few do. In fact, that’s why you’re here, and I am not interested.”
This proved that the Scarlet Witch had a huge negative impact not only on the residents of Westview, but also on Agatha Harkness herself.Agatha is a self-proclaimed villain, but her softest and most vulnerable sides have been seen because of the Scarlet Witch’s influence over her. The fact that Lilia was able to see the damage that the Scarlet Witch had caused Agatha put her incredible power on display immediately, making her an incredibly valuable and formidable member ofAgatha Harkness' coven on the Witches' Road.
8It’s Sharon Davis, Not Mrs. Hart
The ending ofAgatha All Alongepisode 2 saw Agatha Harkness recruit Debra Jo Rupp’s Sharon Davis into her coven, noting that she could have been theblack heart drawn by Lilia Calderuwhen suggesting names for Agatha’s new coven. Agatha said Sharon Davis could have been this candidate because of her Mrs. Hart identity which Wanda Maximoff branded her inside the Westview Hex.Sharon spent the remainder of her journey stressing the fact her name is Sharon Davis, and not Mrs. Hart, which obviously carries some traumatic connotations.
Sharon Davis being referred to as Mrs. Hart called back to the premiere episode ofWandaVision, which saw Wanda Maximoff and Vision squabble over what the black heart on their calendar meant, before realizing it referred to dinner with Mr. and Mrs. Hart. This was the only guise Agatha had ever known Sharon as, so her mistake was forgivable. The actual black heart in Agatha Harkness' coven was later revealed to be Billy Maximoff, meaning Sharon Davis was never supposed to be on the Witches' Road, and her untimely demise could have been avoided.
Agatha All Along Episode 3, “Through Many Miles/Of Tricks and Trials”
For their first trial on the Witches' Road, Agatha Harkness' coven was tasked with drinking wine poisoned with Alewife’s Revenge and then finding an antidote, testing the potion-making skills of Sasheer Zamata’s Jennifer Kale. This seemed straightforward enough, but in a blink and you’ll miss it moment, the poisoned wine may have actually hinted at the influence of the Scarlet Witch once again. The wine was named Reyna, and was a Rioja. In Spanish, roja translates to red, while reyna translates to queen, with the wine perhaps referring to the ‘Red Queen,’ the Scarlet Witch.
This seemed to imply that the Scarlet Witch was playing a part in Agatha Harkness' life even while she and her coven were journeying down the Witches' Road. Her influence is felt everywhere and completely inescapable. It’s also known that the Road changes for the coven, personalizing every detail, so the mention of a Red Queen could have been taken from the mind ofBilly Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch’s son. Other elements of the Witches' Road seem to have referred directly to Billy, so it seems the wine was even catered to Wanda’s son.
6Sharon Davis Begs Wanda Maximoff To Let Her Husband Breathe
One side effect of the Alewife’s Revenge in the wine is hallucinations, powerful, vivid and life-like.Since Sharon Davis was the first to down her glass of wine, she became the canary in the coalmine for the other members of the coven during the Witches' Road’s first trial, as she experienced every side effect first. While Jennifer Kale hallucinated herself being drowned, Lilia Calderu saw her younger self and a skeletal figure, Alice Wu-Gulliver saw her distraught mother andAgatha Harkness saw the Darkholdin a crib, Sharon Davis had a vision of the Scarlet Witch.
Agatha All Along Episode 3: All 5 Witch Visions Explained
Agatha All Along episode 3 explained more about the backstories of the witches with the visions they witnessed in their first Witches' Road trial.
In fact, Sharon Davis' hallucination gave her a glimpse back in time to the events ofWandaVisionepisode 1, “Filmed Before a Live Studio Audience.” This episode saw Sharon and her husband, Todd, who had become Mr. and Mrs. Hart in the Hex, go to dinner at the Maximoff house, which culminated in Mr. Hart choking on his food.InWandaVision, Mrs. Hart creepily urged Wanda Maximoff to"stop it,“while it was revealed she was tragically begging Wanda to let her husband breathe in reality inAgatha All Alongepisode 3, but was censored by the Hex.
5“Red Haired Woman” Appears On Lorna Wu’s Record
Agatha All Along Episode 4, “If I Can’t Reach You/Let My Song Teach You”
Agatha All Alongepisode 4 focused primarily on the coven helping Alice Wu-Gulliver free herself of the generational curse that had befallen her family for years. This created the opportunity for more to be revealed about Alice’s mother, witch rockstar Lorna Wu, who headlined the band, Lorna Wu and the Coral Shore. The album featuring Lorna Wu’s “The Ballad of the Witches' Road,” the most popular cover of the iconic song, also included several other songs, one of which may refer directly to the Scarlet Witch, as it’s titled “Red Haired Woman.”
Lorna Wu and the Coral Shore’s album includes eleven tracks. Side 1 features “The Ballad of the Witches' Road,” “Miles to Go,” “Ember,” “Something Wicked” and “Call the Corners,” while Side 2 features “Mary Mary,” “Red Haired Woman,” “Cinnamon & Sage,” “Flick of the Wrist” and “Swan’s Song.”
Lorna Wu was a prominent member of the witch community, so it would make sense that she would have some knowledge of Wanda Maximoff and her destiny to become the Scarlet Witch. Any powerful witch knows of the Scarlet Witch prophecy, and could have easily put two and two together whenWanda Maximoff officially became an Avengerin the public eye after 2015’sAvengers: Age of Ultron. It’s unclear what the meaning of Lorna Wu’s other songs could be, though several may refer to the Scarlet Witch.
