Despite being one of the most controversial and critiqued series in theDragon Ballfranchise, there is one point that fans and critics ofDragon Ball GTalways agree on:SuperSaiyan Gogeta 4 is one of the most exciting characters in theDragon Balluniverse. Now in an awesome new piece of fanart, Gogeta shows yet again why he’s one of the stars ofDragon Ball’s stellar cast.

The fanart, which was created by artist and Dragon Ball fan@TheTurkishhtankand posted to the Dragon Ball – Daima Reddit page, pays special attention to all the elements of Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta’s design that make the character unique among both Super Saiyan and fusion forms. There’s his funky two-tuned hair that combines Goku’s bangs with Vegeta’s spiked-out style.

There are the serious eyes, but playful smile – and of course, in a hat-tip to the traditional forms - there’s the red-furred tail. Indeed, @TheTurkishhtank’s depiction of Gogeta looks as fearsome as one would imagine when combining two of the universe’s most powerful warriors into one person – then souping them up to their highest power level.

Fusion isn’t Just One of Goku & Vegeta’s Strongest Forms, it Proves Akira Toriyama’s Genius

The Goku-Vegeta fusion forms are not only an extraordinary display of a Dragon Ball power-up, but also a sly example of the series’ brilliance.

The Fanart Brings To Mind Gogeta’s Epic Influence On The Dragon Ball Story

Not Only Was Gogeta An Iconic Character, He Helped Create Another As Well

Although Vegito appeared in theDragon Ballcanon before Gogeta, creatively speaking, Gogeta was the original fusion of Goku and Vegeta. Gogeta first debuted in the 1995 filmDragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn. While the film is not part of the original Dragon Ball timeline, it still influenced series creator Akira Toriyama. In fact, Gogeta’s appearance in the film inspired Toriyama to create his own fusion form for the two Saiyans, which ultimately led to thecreation of Vegito forDragon Ball.

According to an interview with Akira Toriyama, transcribed and posted inDragon Ball Daizenshuu 6, the concept offusion forms did not originally come from Toriyamahimself. Instead, it was suggested by his friend, artist Masakazu Katsura, as a joking response to how Goku and Vegeta could achieve their next ‘power-up.’ Toriyama liked the idea and decided to use it, but not for Goku and Vegeta initially. Instead, he first applied the concept to Goten and Trunks, leading to the creation ofthe infamous Gotenks.

However, before Toriyama could come up with a way for the concept of fusion to work with Goku and Vegeta,Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborndebuted, and with it Gogeta. With the movie having taken some of the spotlight, Toriyama found himself struggling for ideas. He knew he wanted to create a Goku-Vegeta fusion but didn’t want to use the same Fusion Dance method that Goku and Vegeta used to form Gogeta in the film.

That was simply, since Fusion was a plot point that was already taken by one of the movies, I was wondering what I should do.

Vegito Was Toriyama’s Answer To Gogeta

Not to be outdone by the film, Toriyama eventually settled on using earrings as the vehicle for his iteration of the fused Goku-Vegeta form, namely Vegito. He had recently grown fond of drawing earrings in the series. Of course, his Vegito would go on to dominate the fusion space until Gogeta officially entered theDragon Ballcanon inDragon Ball Super: Broly. Nevertheless, as @TheTurkishhTank’s fanart makes clear, even before his officialDragon Balldebut, Super Saiyan 4Gogetawas still an incredibly epic character.

Dragon Ball GT

Dragon Ball GT is the third series in Akira Toriyama’s most famous anime franchise. However, it is the first one not to adapt a manga storyline. Set after the events of the Buu Saga, Dragon Ball GT sees Goku and the Z-Warriors battle powerful villains such as Baby, Super 17, and the Shadow Dragons. 18 years after the 64-episode show was met with a lukewarm reception, Dragon Ball Super replaced it in the anime’s official continuity.
