There are a plethora of optional bosses inDragon Age: The Veilguard, but the series that you’ll encounter in the “Heart of Corruption” questline, including the Fall of the Protector, are really worth your time.Fall of the Protector specifically comes up in the"Gate of Pale Reflections" quest stepthat you’ll get in the Crossroads, but it’s all part of the “Heart of Corruption” quest. You’ll need to do a few things to reach the boss, but once you do, you’ll have your work cut out for you.

Dragon Age: The Veilguardis full of mysterious blighted gates, tough enemies, and cool rewards, and you’re almost always rewarded for following up with tough side quests. The Fall of the Protector fight is one such instance; finding your way to the boss is tricky and will require some hunting. Once you do, however, you’ll have the chance to take this enemy down and gather the rewards it leaves behind.

How To Find The Fall of the Protector Boss

Open the Gate of Pale Reflections

Before you can take on the Fall of the Protector, there are a few things you’ll need to do. Firstly, you’ll need to pick up the “Heart of Corruption” quest in the Crossroadsby walking up to the Blight gate with the three locks next to the Eluvian that brings you from the Lighthouse to the Crossroads.Once you do, you’ll need to head to the Hossberg Wetlands.

In the Wetlands, you must find a large, cyst-like Blight pod surrounded by Darkspawn enemies. Clear out the Darkspawn, then pop the pod open to faceAmarell the Unknown. This is a level 25 Blighted orc boss that comes at you hard. As he’s a Darkspawn,he’s weak to Fire, so avoid his attacks while using your own skills and your companions' abilities to take him down. After he’s been defeated, he’ll drop a Champion Essence.

Because this boss fight is part of a questline, you can track the quest in your journal, which will add a marker on your map. Use this marker in case you’re not sure where to go next.

You’ll then need to use this Essence toopen the Gate of Pale Reflections in the Heights of Athim. If you have the right Essence, you’re looking for another blight-blocked gate, which should open for you. Opening this gate will lead you to the Fall of the Protector.

How To Defeat The Fall of the Protector

The Protector Is A Magic-Weilding Boss, So Watch Out For Ranged Attacks

Unlike the other two Revenant bosses in the “Heart of Corruption” questline, Fall of the Protector isn’t a spear and shield user. This means that you will ignore any muscle memory you’ve earned from the other two fights to take on the Fall properly. Instead of melee based attacks, Fall will pelt you with magic, which is both annoying and harder to avoid.

Before you’re able to even confront the Fall of the Protector, you’ll need to defeat the Undead Horde that crawls out of the cracks and piles of bones scattered around the arena. This Horde has one large health bar, but each member of the Horde has its own health bar as well.Remember to use the right attacks against Shielded and enemies with Barriers to defeat the Horde efficiently. After the Horde is defeated, the Fall of the Protector will awaken.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard - The Best Build For Warrior

The Warrior is the best option on the frontlines of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. They use Rage which is gained both when attacking and being hit.

Fall is a level 42 boss that really means business. It’s vulnerable to Cold and resistant to Fire, so bring Neve along for some extra help.In a pinch, you’re able to alsorespec Rook inDA: Veilguardto make them more suited to the fight. As mentioned previously, it mostly uses magic to take you down, which you can see inTrophygamers' fight against it on YouTube. Here are some of the attacks you’ll need to watch out for:

Tip

Ice Ring

Every so often, the Fall will summon icy spikes to surround it. If you stand close enough or far away enough, you may avoid taking damage from this AoE attack.

Ice Barrage

Fall will throw a storm of six ice bolts at you. If you’re close, they’ll hit you pretty hard, so stay further away to give yourself more time to dodge these projectiles.

Ice Orb

This is less of an attack, but Fall will turn into an icy sphere and fly away from you, creating an Ice Ring where it lands and doing AoE damage.

Blight Storm

Blight bombs will rain from the sky, falling onto red-marked areas in the arena and leaving Blight puddles behind.

Ice Beam

Fall will channel a beam of ice magic at you. It seems that the Fall can’t hit you with this one if you’re standing close enough to it, so either be ready to dodge or get super close when it begins to channel.

When you get the Fall of the Protector down to about 60% health, its shield will return and begin to draw power from the Fade tear, healing itself. When it does this, use RT to break its shield as fast as possible to prevent it from healing. The shield will break when you get the blue bar down to zero, allowing you to damage its health once again.

Taash in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

I tend to underutilize my Rune skills when I’m in battle, so don’t forget about these super helpful passive buffs you have on cooldown.

After you break its shield and return to the damage phase, Fall will summon a few non-boss adds for you to clear, but they’ll have shields. This will make them challenging, but not impossible, to deal with.Use any AoE skills to defeat them or keep them out of your way while you continue to take on Fall.

At about 45% HP, the Fall will do as many other demon enemies do and separate you from your allies. There’s not much you can do about this other than survive and continue to do damage,as your companions will be unable to see or damage the Fall during this time. A black fog will also surround you, so it’s in your best interest to stay near the Fall to stay aware of its attacks.

Eventually, you’ll do enough damage to defeat the Fall of the Protector. You’ll get the following rewards:

Unique Chest

The Unique Chests seem to reward you based on your class, so I’m not sure what you’ll get. Generally, though, there are unique items inDragon Age: The Veilguard whichare pretty powerful and worth considering. “Heart of Corruption” is one of the steps to gettingVeilguard’s secret ending, making it even more essential for completionists. Either way, you’ll have defeated the Fall of the Protector and can now continue to defend the Crossroads against the Blight.
