Among the variousDigimonanime, the third season,Digimon Tamersis often hailed as the most popular. The tale of Takato and his friends stands out for its slightly more mature approach, containing some of the franchise’s most terrifying characters. One of these digital nightmares could be considered a world-ending threat to the world, despite its brief appearance in the series:Megidramon.
This dark evolution of the protagonist’s partner, Guilmon, is the embodiment of all the anger and pain the characters felt after the death of Leomon. By unleashing this creature upon the Digital World, Takato could have caused the destruction of everything he held dear. This horrifying detail tends to be overlooked by fans, as it was barely touched upon in the series.

Megidramon Is The Franchise’s Most Dangerous Digimon
His Power Is Said To Be A Threat To Reality
In episode #34 of theDigimon Tamersanime series, Beelzemon fights against his former friends while on their journey through the Digital World. Since the kids and their partners were against the idea of injuring one who once was their ally, they tried their hardest to make the Demon Lord see reason. This hesitation caused Beelzemon to rapidly gain the advantage, culminating inLeomon being mortally wounded and dying, following the dark tradition of mostDigimonshows. Jeri, his tamer, became inconsolable, unable to cope with the passing of her dear companion.
Seeing her in such a state caused Takato to release all his rage, forcing his once friendly and kind Guilmon to evolve into the terrifying Megidramon. This creature, known as the Evil Dragon of the Digital World, did not hesitate to furiously attack Beelzemon, not giving him a single moment to rest. Afraid of seeing his partner act like a rampaging beast, Takato tried to calm Megidramon down, to no avail. If not for the sudden appearance of Makuramon inthe amazing episode #35, one of the powerful Devas, Beelzemon would have died during this intense combat.

While the anime made it clear that Megidramon was a danger to the heroes, it did not go in-depth into the horrifying lore that this monster hides. The official reference book of theDigimonfranchisestates that this dragon-like creature is considered the evilest of his kind, causing fear even among the rulers of the Digital World. His name comes from the word Meggidon, the final battle between god and evil that is prophesized to bring the end of the world.
Takato’s Rage Could Have Ended It All
One of the main differences betweenDigimon Tamersand other seasons of the anime franchise is the fact that the digital creatures become stronger by absorbing the data of their opponents. In episode #35, Beelzemon barely overpowered Megidramon after absorbing the energy of Makuramon, Rapidmon, and Taomon. This implies thatGuilmon’s evil form was more powerful than three Ultimate Digimon combined. If his rampage had not been stopped, and he had consumed the data of Beelzemon, his power would have increased greatly.
None of the Tamers or their partners would have been able to defeat such an imposing opponent, as the power of Megidramon is said to rival that ofthe awe-inspiring Sovereigns of the Digital World. In his anger, Takato could have caused the destruction of not only the native land of the Digimon, but his friends as well. This was a necessary lesson not only for the protagonist but his allies as well, as they realized that raw power was not the answer to their problems.
The battle against Megidramon and Gallantmon, Gulmon’s other evolution which is often associated with the outstandingly powerful Royal Knights, also served as a wake-up call for Beelzemon. He understood the error of his ways, returning to his original Tamers and becoming a vital part of the final battle against the trauma-inducing D-Reaper. Despite its potential danger, Megidramon’s appearance was essential for the characters to grow as individuals and be prepared to face the final antagonist. The dragon’s rampage might have been brief, but it will never be forgotten by fans of this incredible show.
Digimon Tamersis an amazing coming-of-age story in which the protagonists learn not only about themselves but the world they inhabit.Megidramon’s appearance, while dangerous, was necessary for them to learn the dangers of unchecked emotions like grief and anger. It is these small but powerful details which make this series one of the most beloved among fans of this amazing franchise.
