James Gunn’sDC Universemay soon have its John Stewart Green Lantern for the newLanternslive-action series. It has been a busy week for one of DC Studios' most anticipated projects on the Chapter 1 Gods and Monsters slate, as theLanternsseries is busy casting their leads. Earlier this week,Kyle Chandler was cast as Hal Jordan, but the HBO drama is still looking for John, and now it appears the search may soon be over.
According toThe Hollywood Reporter,Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) and Stephan James (If Beale Street Could Talk) are both currently"in the mix"for the role of John Stewartin HBO’sLanterns. The trade notes that it is unclear if they are"testing or reading"but that a decision could be finalized as early as the end of this weekend. Further,THRreports Damson Idris (Snowfall) was in contention at one point, but isn’t any longer. At the time of this story’s publication, DC Studios, HBO, and Gunn have yet to comment on theLanternsreport.
What DC’s John Stewart Actor Shortlist Reveals About Green Lantern Show
The fact thattheLanternsTV showis this close to finally landing an actor for John Stewart means thatthe DC Studios series is on the right track as they are eying production to start in January 2025. With the actors that are reportedly up for the role, it lines up with past reports thatLanternswill depict John as younger in comparison to Hal, who will be established as a “Lantern legend.” Having Chandler as a veteran actor alongside either Pierre or James will also set up the mentor/mentee relationship well.
The bigger question, however, is whether Chandler as Hal will be doing any chemistry tests with either actor this weekend, assuming that part of theLanternscasting report is true.The Hal and John dynamic will be extremely integral inLanterns, meaning that there has to be a believable vibe with whoever gets cast next to Chandler. It’s also possible that the finalization of the John casting search won’t be completed until next week or later.

With Pierre and James being incredibly gifted actors,both of them would be a solid fit as John forLanternsand Gunn’s overall DC Universe. Whoever is cast as John will be the first actor ever to play him in live-action in the world of television, and obviously in laterDCU Chapter 1 Gods and Monstersprojects. Hopefully, the world will know soon enough who will star as John inLanterns,with Chandler as Hal.
