As one of the first major clone characters inStar Wars,Commander Codyhas long since been a fan-favorite, and much of this has to do with his storiedStar Warshistory. Cody made his first appearance inStar Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sithas the leading clone trooper character, always seen right by Obi-Wan Kenobi’s side. Ever since then, Cody’s character has been fleshed out even more, making him not only one of the most interesting clone characters inStar Wars, but also one of its very best.

Cody has only appeared in animatedStar Warsprojects ever since his live-action debut, including bothStar Wars: The Clone WarsandStar Wars: The Bad Batch. He did, however, almost appear in the live-actionObi-Wan KenobiTV show, but his role was ultimately scrapped as the story transitioned from a movie trilogy to a limited TV series. Still, there’s certainly potential for Cody to return again, especially with the path he’s currently on. Here’s everything you need to know about Cody and hisStar Warsstory so far.

Star Wars Commander Cody in The Clone Wars

Commander Cody Is A First Generation Clone

He Was One Of The First Clones

As a first generation clone, Cody was one of the very first clones ofJango Fettto ever be produced. With the production of the clone army secretly beginning on Kamino about 10 years beforeStar Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, Cody was given plenty of time to train and prepare for his role in the Grand Army of the Republic, especially with the clones having an accelerated growth rate.Cody is thus one of the eldest among his brothers, and the respect he’s garnered from all of them proves how well he’s managed that responsibility.

Captain Rex, another well-known clone from Anakin Skywalker’s 501st Legion, is also a first generation clone, which is part of the reason why he and Cody are so close.

He Was The Jedi’s Right-Hand Man

Cody was a commander in the 212th Attack Battalion, whose general was none other than Obi-Wan Kenobi himself. The 212th wore the yellow-orange paint seen on Cody’s armor, a common practice amongst the various battalions in the clone army that helped to distinguish them from one another.Commander Cody grew close with his general as they worked together to lead their men, with Obi-Wan often praising Cody for his loyalty, leadership, and more.

Commander Cody Couldn’t Resist His Inhibitor Chip During Order 66

He Executed The Order & Served The Empire

Unfortunately, for all his bravery, honor, and more, even Cody couldn’t resist hisinhibitor chipwhenOrder 66was enacted. As seen inRevenge of the Sith,Cody was the first to comply with the order, commanding his troops to aim for Obi-Wan on Utapau and shoot him down as soon as Palpatine had ordered him to do so. Cody has since become one of the most well-known figures in the tragedy of Order 66, due to this legacy of him being the first to ever carry out the order in a heartbreaking sequence of Jedi deaths.

Every Clone Who Disobeyed Order 66 In Star Wars Canon & Legends

Star Wars' Clone Troopers were bred for absolute loyalty and secretly created to destroy the Jedi…but not every one obeyed the sinister Order 66.

Of course, it was the inhibitor chip that made Cody act this way, meaning it wasn’t of his own free will. This is easily one ofStar Wars’best retcons, one that was made inThe Clone Warswith a fantastic arc that saw the clone trooper Fives of the 501st Legion uncover the conspiracy completely before he was killed for knowing too much. While some clones were able to fight the chips to various degrees, fromClone Force 99’s complete disobedience to Captain Rex getting a few words out to Ahsoka Tano, Cody couldn’t fight his chip.

Cody Eventually Betrayed The Empire & Went AWOL

He Realized What He Was Doing Was Wrong

Over time, however, the effects of the inhibitor chips began to fade in all clones, and they were left to reckon with what they had done - Cody included. This reckoning is seen mostly inThe Bad Batch, with Cody working alongside former Clone Force 99 member Crosshair and debating the Empire’s integrity the entire time. With the inhibitor chip weakened,Cody was forced to face all he had done, and his disillusionment with the Empire began to set in quickly.

Star Wars: What Happened To Commander Cody After Executing Order 66

Commander Cody went on to serve the Galactic Empire for years after Palpatine’s Order 66 turned the clone troopers against the Jedi.

After a mission on behalf of the Empire that Cody completed with Crosshair, the commander became fully opposed to the regime he was forced to swear himself to. Realizing the Empire’s principles were no longer aligned with those of the Republic,Cody went AWOL, fleeing the Empire’s forces and their wrongful ideologies. Cody didn’t specify where he was heading next, but wherever it was, it was no doubt far, far away from the cruelty of the Empire who forced him to comply with an order he never would have given.

Cody’s Star Wars Fate Has Not Yet Been Revealed

Where Could He Appear Next?

Cody going AWOL inThe Bad Batchis the last audiences have heard of him and his fate, though it’s likely far from the last time the famed clone officer will be seen. There are quite a few ways in whichStar Warscan bring him back should they seek to, in both live-action and animation. These storytelling opportunities would enrich not just Cody’s own story, but also that of the greaterStar Warsstory.

Star Warshas yet to announce a new animated TV show, and many viewers are optimistic about getting one that centers on the clone rebellion led by Captain Rex, as glimpsed inThe Bad Batch. Cody would more than likely become a part of this, especially after going AWOL from the Empire.Even if he isn’t a part of the rebellion itself, however, it seems likely that he would at least be reunited with his brothers in some way, especially since Gregor - another member of the 212th - is amongst Rex’s ranks.

Scrapped Obi-Wan Kenobi Plot Would Finally Bring Closure To Revenge Of The Sith’s Order 66

Obi-Wan Kenobi never fully recovered from Order 66, but an abandoned plotline could give him a chance to heal and reunite with an old friend.

In terms of live-action, new conversations aboutObi-Wan Kenobiseason 2that have opened up with Ewan McGregor havemany audiences hoping that the scrapped Cody plot will be used in a new installment. Unfortunately, this additional season has yet to be confirmed, though McGregor has stated that ideas are being explored. ShouldObi-Wan Kenobiseason 2 take the opportunity to use its old Cody plot, then Cody would again have a chance to shine inStar Wars, and would hopefully receive some proper closure to his story.
