Chris Hemsworth Explains Optimus Prime’s Evolution Throughout Transformers One

Screen Rant:Transformers Oneis about the perfectTransformersmovie for longtime fans and to introduce new fans. Every generation of kids growing up had a hero in media and for a lot of the kids in the eighties, like myself, Optimus was that hero. Chris, what makes Optimus Prime such a heroic character to so many people, and what excited you the most about playing Optimus' early days with Orion?
Chris Hemsworth: Well, the Optimus that we’ve known previously in the cartoons, in the films, has this consistent, eternal blind optimism and an incredible sense of hope. What interested me was the fact that we get to see where that comes from.
There was a certain naivete to him as a younger individual that allowed him to be adventurous and dream bigger than anyone could dream and not sit around and say, no, this is my place. Actually think there’s something else out there for us. I feel we’re made for something better. And that was fun. That was, when it wasn’t contained was quite, there was a brashness and a cockiness to it that got him in trouble.
To see that begin but then be sort of honed into the focus that the Optimus Prime that we know and love has and becomes, was a lot of fun to play with. That was what excited me and drew me to the role.
Brian Tyree Henry Shares His Approach To Playing Megatron In Transformers One
“I really wanted people to walk away feeling like they understood him.”
Brian, Megatron has always been my favorite character and after you played him I know exactly why. I understand his motivations. I understand he is the way he is. He has arguably the most dramatic transformation in the film going from a friendly minor to the beginning of the antagonist we know as Megatron. What excited you the most about D-16’s journey and what did you want to bring to the role that went beyond the page?
Brian Tyree Henry: Heart. I really wanted people to walk away feeling like they understood him. I really wanted to be like, oh yeah, Optimus Prime, yeah, cool, but also, oh man, we really get it Megatron. We absolutely get it. A lot of that was anchored in the friendship, to get to see him interact with someone who’s a contemporary.
When we see Megatron, he’s always leading the Decepticon. He’s to be feared, but this time you just get to see him. There’s a scene of us on the train together. He gives me a sticker, just to have that kind of levity and that kind of camaraderie. I really wanted people to see that with him.
You get to see that with D-16 because he has this charge, he has a job, he has a basic nine to five. Him and his friend go everywhere together. And how he’s usually the level headed one, he’s like, well, I don’t know if we should do that. What is your problem?
So to see the challenge between morals, oh, is this right or is this wrong? Is this good or is this bad? Was really important for me to get the viewers to see. So I’m really glad that Josh Cooley, our director, gave us a script and a story where we could actually play with that story.
Chris Hemsworth: Think about anything in life, storytelling, real life situations. The actual heartbreak or the conflict or the moment where things fall apart isn’t the most interesting thing to watch. Everyone just wants to know: how did it happen? How did that accident occur? How did this problem become that thing?
That was what was so enjoyable to actually from the ground up, start with, well, let’s present them on the furthest end of the spectrum as we can. Let’s have them be as close of friends and buddies and brothers and what have you. So it makes the heartbreak even more impactful.
