Following Tracy Spiridakos' exit after the season 11 finale,Chicago PDseason 12 adds a couple of new names to the show’s cast list and brings back many familiar stars. The NBC police procedural series, created by Dick Wolf and Matt Olmstead, revolves around the Intelligence Unit in the 21st District of the Chicago Police Department. Led by Sergeant Hank Voight since the beginning, Intelligence has experienced many changes over the years (e.g. DetectiveHailey Upton leavingChicago PD), and, yet,five original actors remain in theChicago PDseason 12 cast.
The originalChicago PDcast members no longer on the show are Sophia Bush as Erin Lindsay, Jesse Lee Soffer as Jay Halstead, Jon Seda as Antonio Dawson, Elias Koteas as Alvin Olinsky, and Archie Kao as Sheldon Jin.
After the events of theChicago PDseason 11 finale,Voight and the remaining Intelligence Unit members try to adjust to working without Uptonin season 12. They try replacing Spiridakos' character’s spot on the team but run into some trouble. Meanwhile, Voight deals with personal issues that bleed into his work life, as displayed during theChicago PDseason 21 premiere.

Adam Ruzek
Character:Chicago PDseason 12 begins with Flueger’s Officer Adam Ruzek working at the Intelligence Unit alongside his friend from the police academy, Detective Emily Martel. The two are seemingly close as Martel even has a nickname for Ruzek that he absolutely hates — Ruzey.Spoilers ahead!Unfortunately, Ruzek witnesses Martel die right in front of him at the end of episode 1. As the season continues, Ruzek will likely be dealing with his grief, while also planning his wedding.

Character:Sadly,Burgess is absent during theChicago PDseason 12 premierebecause she is attending a NAWLEE (National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives) out of town.Squerciati’s Burgess returns to Chicago in episode 3after episode 1’s tragedy. Burgess will have some happy moments in season 12, though, as she is planning her wedding alongside Ruzek. According to showrunner Gwen Sigan’s interview withTV Insider, a wedding between Burgess and Ruzek is in the cards for the back half of the season.

Character:Many viewers have been waiting for the day when Atwater becomes a detective, andChicago PDseason 12 may finally be his season. Following the premiere,a detective’s spot opens up in Intelligence, and Atwater could easily fill that role.Prior to the premiere, showrunner Gwen Sigan teased thatone character would be promoted inChicago PDseason 12. While Sigan could have been referring to Ruzek or Burgess, the most deserving candidate would undoubtedly be Atwater.

Actress:Amy Morton was born in Oak Park, Illinois, where she graduated from high school before joining the Steppenwolf Theater in 1997.Morton has primarily worked in the Chicago theater scene throughout her careerbut eventually made her way to Broadway. In 2008, Morton was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her performance as Barbara inAugust: Osage County. Despite her theater work, Morton has also appeared in numerous films and TV shows, including her series regular role as Sergeant Trudy Platt inChicago PD.
