Chee and Manuelito have had a complicated romantic relationship inDark Windssince the beginning. InDark Windsseason 1, they dated for a while, before the revelation that Chee was an FBI agent ruined their trust. Then, at theend ofDark Windsseason 2, Bernadette kissed Chee only to go hundreds of miles south to work with Border Patrol. Now,Dark Windsseason 3 is making their relationship even more complicated.
InDark Windsseason 3, episode 2, Bernadette had an unexpected phone call with Chee. They exchanged a few updates and jokes and had a fairly good time talking to each other, until they ran out of small talk. Bernadette choked up and said “It’s nice to hear your voice, Chee.” Unfortunately, Chee didn’t say anything in response, and Bernadette ended up dancing with Ivan Muños (Alex Meraz). None of that was a great sign for their romance, but it did give me a bit of hope that Manuelito and Chee will get together beforeDark Windsseason 4.

As awkward as their conversation was,Bernadette’s phone call with Chee inDark Windsseason 3, episode 2 proved one thing beyond a doubt: they still have feelings for each other. Bernadette wouldn’t have told Chee that she liked the sound of his voice if she wasn’t still interested in him, and Chee probably would have come up with a witty response if he wasn’t as devastated that Bernadette was gone. There were so many things that both of them wanted to say during that phone call that I’m thoroughly convinced the only reason they’re not together is a simple matter of geography.

Even the worst part of the scene - Bernadette dancing with Ivan and claiming she didn’t miss Chee - was a sign that she’s still in love with Chee.As she was dancing with Ivan, Bernadette’s face fully betrayed her emotions, and it was so obvious that she really does wish she was dancing with Chee. There’s clearly still more than just a spark left between Chee and Bernadette, and if they can just get together before the end ofDark Windsseason 3, I know that spark will turn to a flame.

Luckily for fans of Chee and Bernadette’s romantic relationship, it already looks likeDark Windsseason 3 is setting up a chance for them to reconnect. Chee and Leaphorn’s (Zahn McClarnon) investigation into Ernesto Cata’s death is likely going to connect to Bernadette’s investigation into Tom Spenser (Bruce Greenwood) sooner or later. Even if it doesn’t however, Bernadette will likely leave the Border Patrol at some point and rejoin the Tribal Police. Either of those options would remove the physical barrier separating Bernadette and Chee and leave the door wide open to them taking another shot at romance.
