Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2is seemingly designed with co-op at the forefront, especially in its Operations game mode. When a mission is selected, the game automatically starts looking for two more players to fill in the squad, and each person must use a differentSpace Marine class. Even the main campaign is fully playable in co-op, with friends taking control of brothers Gadriel and Chairon. Even in Operations, though, sometimes it’s nice to cut through the Xenos hordes playing solo, without worrying about coordinating with others.
At launch, Operations effectively makes up half of the game’s story, covering six of the 12 totalmissions inSpace Marine 2, and showing the exploits of squads supporting the main trio. More Operations missions are on the way, according toSpace Marine 2’s roadmap, but there’s already plenty of progress to be made in the mode. The six classes each have their own perk tree associated with Operations, and each mission has four difficulties to climb through. It’s clearly a game mode designed with pre-made squads in mind, but that won’t stop an enterprising Ultramarine from playing Operations solo.

Space Marine 2’s Operations Mode Can Be Played Solo
You’ll Have To Disconnect From The Internet First
It is technically possible to playWarhammer 40K: Space Marine 2’s Operations game mode solo, but it requires a bit of a workaround. There is no option to start an Operations mission alone – the game always searches for teammates – soplaying Operations solo requires disconnecting from the internet. This is most easily done from a hardware level, such as going into a console’s system settings and forgetting a wi-fi network, but this is more of a hassle than most players will probably like.
Another option is attempting to get theSpare Marine 2game client to disconnect from its servers. For instance, players on PS5 can launch the game and load into the battle barge, thus connecting to theSpace Marine 2servers, then put their console into rest mode. When the PS5 is turned back on,Space Marine 2will ask if players want to return to the main menu and connect to the servers, or continue offline. This will let players enter an Operations mission solo, but again, it’s an imperfect solution.

Quick Resume on Xbox Series X/S will accomplish the same results as putting a PS5 into rest mode, since turning off the Xbox and restartingSpace Marine 2via quick resume will circumvent the normal process of connecting to servers via the main menu.
Both methods forceSpace Marine 2to operate while disconnected from its servers, with consequences for the player’s convenience – being unable to use a console or PC’s other online functions, like party chat, for example. This is currently the only way to play Operations solo, and starting a mission this way will provide the player with two bot-controlled teammates.Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2can be played entirely offline, except for the PvP Eternal War mode, but it must be forced offline, as there is no solo queue for Operations.

Operations Mode Is Better Played In Co-Op Than Alone
Bot Teammates Aren’t As Effective
While it’s unfortunate that there is currently no way to begin an Operations mission solo without a workaround inWarhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, it’s at least understandable why it was designed this way. Operations is the dedicated co-op mode – more so than the main campaign – andplaying without human-controlled teammates is less than ideal. Bot squad mates on the lower two difficulty levels are passable, but the more challenging Operations are much better suited to a full team.
Space Marine 2bots tend to be pretty singular in their strategy, charging directly into the fray regardless of circumstances, and there’s no way to choose their class. Even playing with strangers sans verbal communication is preferred. Human players are simply better, and have greater instincts when it comes to working together. An Operations mission on the lowest difficulty can almost be stumbled through, but a Ruthless mission will require tight coordination between squad mates, starting in class picks, all the way through each combat encounter.
Space Marine 2 Appears To Be Adding Solo Operations Missions After Launch
A Year Of Post-Launch Support Is Already Promised
According to the game’s roadmap, “private PvE lobbies” will be added toSpace Marine 2in September 2024, which will presumably let players start an Operations mission alone. This would certainly be a nice quality-of-life feature for those who want to run through a mission casually without having to worry about inconveniencing others, but it’s also clear that the long-term goal of Operations skews toward players upgrading each class and tackling missions at higher difficulty settings.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Review: A Long Overdue Sequel And Strong Third-Person Shooter/Hack & Slash
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 delivers a long overdue sequel, providing focused gameplay in spite of some minor narrative and technical gripes.
There is already one year of post-launch support planned forSpace Marine 2, including more co-op missions, so an update to add the option of playing Operations solo is a nice early inclusion. Season 2, sometime later in 2024, will also bring Lethal difficulty, which should provide a new challenge, and compliment the even later addition of PvE prestige ranks. For the time being, it’s a bit of an inconvenience to playWarhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2Operations mode solo, but those hoping to be a one-man army against the forces of Chaos seemingly won’t have to wait long.
