Batmanhas had a lot of great love interests over the years. Whilehis two greatest love interestshave always been antiheroes Catwoman and Talia al Ghul, there’s another pairing that isn’t talked about nearly enough - this time with a fellow superhero. Now, DC is finally bringing back the relationship in a terrifying new storyline.
In the preview pages forBatman: Full Moon #1by Rodney Barnes and Stevan Subic, readers see Batman fighting off a gang of weapons dealers. But the surprising part is thatBatman missed a date with Zatanna Zatara to do it. While the two characters have been romantic in the past, it’s a surprising sight to see them again, as DC rarely touches on this romance.

This relationship has always been highly underrated, and it’s great to see DC bringing it back, even if it’s only for this one story. While Batman has had tons of iconic love interests over the years, Justice League Dark’s Zatanna has always felt like the one who wasn’t explored nearly as much as she deserved.
Batman Admits Zatanna Is the 1 Hero Who Sees Straight Through His Hype
Batman has spent years cultivating his reputation as a fearsome and intimidating creature of vengeance, but Zatanna sees him quite differently.
Zatanna Has One Major Difference From Batman’s Past Loves
Batman: Full Moon#1by Rodney Barnes, Stevan Subic and Rus Wooton
Zatanna has always been a great match for Batman. One of the major things that sets Zatanna apart from Batman’s other love interests is the fact she knew Bruce before he became Batman. Both Talia al Ghul and Selina Kyle met Bruce as the Dark Knight. They only got to see the man under the cowl later on, and always secondary to Batman’s mission. ButZatanna knew Bruce as a teenager. They both met when they were fairly young and Bruce was studying escapology under her father, Giovanni.
Bruce Wayne buried a lot of his identity to become the Dark Knight, but Zatanna has seen the humanity he constantly tries to hide from everyone else. She was around before Bruce built the idealized persona he uses to fight crime, and so not only does she see aspects of him that no-one else does, butBatman himself feels less of a need to put on a performance around her. Their shared focus on superheroism means that they understand each other on a level their other love interests don’t. Catwoman and John Constantine are rogues, and they don’t quite understand what it’s like to work with the Justice League to keep Earth safe.

Batman Needs Zatanna for This Particular Mission
The Dark Knight’s Inexperience with Magic Is a Major Weakness
Zatanna being chosen as the love interest for this story is likely no coincidence. Batman is a genius, but he’s at his best when he’s working in the world of the rational.Batman has never been great with magic, but magic is Zatanna’s entire world. A werewolf is a supernatural threat, and while the weaknesses of werewolves are well known, there could be some magical rules at play that Batman isn’t aware of. That makes the renewal ofZatannaandBatman’s romance even more exciting, since lives are on the line if they can’t work together effectively.
Batman: Full Moon #1is on sale from DC Comics on June 27, 2025!
