Baldur’s Gate 3has officially revealed its next major update, which will follow up on the major changes made in September 2024 with Patch 7. AlthoughBaldur’s Gate 3officially left early access in August 2023, the game has received extensive post-launch support that’s added plenty of new features and fixed a long list of issues. Major updates are starting to wind down, but Patch 8 makes it clear that support isn’t over quite yet.
As announced in a Community Update available onSteam,Baldur’s Gate 3Patch 7 will add photo mode, cross-play, and 12 new subclasses in 2025. Photo mode and cross-play have both been promised for a while, but until now, there was no clear picture of when they might be expected to arrive. The batch of new subclasses includes fan favorites like the College of Glamour Bard, Hexblade Warlock, and Swashbuckler Rogue.

What Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8 Will Look Like
Larian Studios Has Provided Basic Details
The Community Update also provides some basic details of how the new major features will work. Photo mode features the staples of modern in-game photography options, with settings to adjust camera features like exposure and focus along with toggles to remove characters from the shot. Effects like contrast and saturation provide post-processing options, and frames and stickers add some additional fun.Cross-play, which allows friends to form a party together across different platforms, sounds like a simple system, with options to enable cross-play and invite players available in-game.
Baldur’s Gate 3: 12 Best Console Mods On PS5 & Xbox
Baldur’s Gate 3 recently released mods for console users that bring new excitement to the game for both new and returning players.
Baldur’s Gate 3Patch 8’s new subclasses also focus onhighly-requested options, and various mods for the game have attempted to cover these bases. One new subclass is allotted to each class that’s present inBaldur’s Gate 3, and many of them fill in gaps that weren’t well-represented in the previously available options. The full list of new subclasses is as follows:

An official solution should be a better way to represent the unique abilities and toolkits of each subclass than mods, which tend to rely on editing or re-flavoring existing systems rather than creating new ones entirely. The update promises “new abilities, animations, VFX, summons and cantrips” along with “a touch of homebrewing,” meaning Larian is continuing to rework things to best fit the game rather than sticking to tabletopDungeons & Dragonsdefaults.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8 Could Be One Of The Best Yet
Great Additions To The Game
Patch 8 might be the most exciting update I’ve seen forBaldur’s Gatein a while. Photo mode has been mybiggest wishlist featuresince launch, and I’m a huge fan of the subclass selection on display. Death Domain is a great newoption for Shadowheartthat fits with Shar’s area of expertise, and the Drunken Master Monk is the perfect way to make use of all the alcohol lying around in the game.
Forget Baldur’s Gate 3, There’s Another D&D Game That Needs A Sequel
Despite the success of Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian won’t be making a sequel, but that doesn’t mean another D&D IP can’t get a sequel to fill the void.
That being said,I’m not going to get my hopes up for the patch to release anytime soon. “Next year” is a wide range, and I’d rather assume it will come late in the year and be pleasantly surprised if it releases sooner. Regardless,Baldur’s Gate 3Patch 8 seems like another great addition to a fantastic game, even if it could very well end up being the last of the major updates.
