Concept art fromAvatar: Fire and Ashreveals the first look at the Fire Tribe. The sequel toAvatar: The Way of Waterand the third installment in the franchise, the movie is set to be released on August 03, 2025.TheFire and Ashstorywill be bringing back many of its predecessor’s cast members, including Sam Worthington (Jake Sully), Zoe Saldaña (Neytiri), Sigourney Weaver (Kiri), Jack Champion (Spider), and Stephen Lang (Quaritch), while also expected to introduce the Fire Tribe, offering more insight into the diverse Na’vi cultures.

The first glimpse was revealed byDiscussingFilmon Twitter from D23 Brazil and showcases a group of Na’vi surrounded by unidentified creatures, as they walk through fire. The image is mysterious, as it does not showcase exactly how these Na’vi behave, but the post features a quote from James Cameron’s presentation at the event, saying that these Na’vi “havea lot of anger and a lot of rage”. Nicknamed the Ash People, they will be a central piece of the movie.

Another group of Na’vi will be revealed, aside from the Ash People.Cameron will introduce two different tribes in the movie, which will be volcano-based and air-based. He described (viaAgentsFandom) that one tribe is “nomadic and travel through the air”, while the other “represents the dark side of the Na’vi”. The fire-based group was “destroyed by volcanic eruptions” and now chooses to “resent nature and everything the forest Na’vi preach.” It is not the only insight into the upcoming movie, however, as the DisneyD23 account revealed other pieces of concept art:

The above image features a Na’vi flying on the back of a creature with a gaping maw and spike-like feathers.

The next image showcases a Fire Tribe village, complete with more flying creatures and a desert environment, filled with sand and large rock formations.

Disney D23 also revealed air-based Na’vi flying in living hot air balloons, using them to navigate Pandora like never before.

Another image showcases more of the nomadic tribe’s living hot air balloons as they fly over the water and are greeted by waving and friendly Na’vi.

The final image seemingly reveals more of the water-based Metkayina Clan, as they greet the underwater tulkun in a massive village-wide meeting on the water.

What The New Tribes Mean For Avatar: Fire And Ash

Fire & Ash’s Tribes Have Drawn Criticism

AfterAvatar: The Way of Waterintroduced a water-focused tribe, it was only a matter of time before the franchise chose to branch out. The Ash People and the nomadic tribe will likely feature new insights into the ways of the Na’vi that could differ from the traditional nature-based lifestyles that have defined the franchise. Given that the Ash People reportedly despise nature, they may very well work with the Resources Development Administration (RDA) in an attempt to extinguishPandora’s natural landscapes. Rather than siding with Jake Sully, as other tribes have, they may quickly betray the wider Sully Family.

It has already been confirmed that the Ash People will be villains inAvatar 3.

Unfortunately, the decision to focus on a fire and air-based tribe has naturally drawn some criticism. Having three friendly tribes, who are focused on earth, water, and air, has naturally drawn comparisons totheAvatar: The Last Airbenderfranchise.TheAvatarmovies now even include an evil tribe of people who hate nature and are closely tied to fire. Each franchise shares similar concepts, especially because both include battles between industrialization and natural lifestyles. The two franchises even have the same name, making for easy comparisons.

Our Take On The New Avatar 3 Tribes

Cameron Needs To Make Avatar 3 More Distinct

Considering that the movie franchise has earned over $5 billion at the box office, it has earned the right to experiment with different concepts. Yet leaning intoThe Last Airbenderconcepts is just disappointing. The two franchises were both likely inspired by mythology, but Cameron should be aware of the similarities. The movies could set themselves apart by featuring an evil nomadic tribe, rather than simply showcasing the same concept as the show. It will be fun to see more of the Pandora world, but theAvatar: Fire and Ashconcepts simply seem too similar to the Nickelodeon show.
