TheAlien: Romulussequel gets a new update confirming the movie’s status and two characters' returns. Directed by Fede Alvarez, the latest installment in the long-runningAlienfranchise hit theaters in August, following a young crew as they encounter a Xenomorph aboard a derelict space station. TheAlien: Romuluscastincluded Cailee Spaeny as Rain, David Jonsson as Andy, and Isabela Merced as Kay, with the rest of the cast including Archie Renaux, Aileen Wu, and Spike Fearn.
In a recent interview withTHR, 20th Century Studios boss Steve Asbell comments on what’s next for theAlienfranchise afterRomulus, revealing where the sequel stands. While the film sounds like it’s still in early development, with the story still being figured out and Alvarez having not yet officially signed on to the project, Asbell reveals thatthe next movie will indeed follow Rain and Andy after their Xenomorph encounter. Check out Asbell’s comment below:

We’re working on a sequel idea now. We haven’t quite closed our deal with Fede [Alvarez], but we are going to, and he has an idea that we’re working on. The two survivors, Rain and Andy, played by Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson, were real highlights of the film. And so I always think of it like, “Wow, where do people want to see them go next?” We know there’s going to be aliens. We know there’s going to be great horror set pieces. But I fell in love with both of them and I want to see what their story is.
When Could Another Alien Movie Release?
Alvarez’sAlienmovie earned positive reviews and was a box office success, grossing over $350.7 million worldwide. TheAlien: Romulusendingfeatures Rain and Andy entering cryo sleep and heading off to Yvaga after defeating a terrifying Xenomorph hybrid, and the next movie could pick up this story thread. Alvarez already teased some of hisAlien: Romulussequel ideasback in August, revealing thatYvaga could end up being “a terrible place” instead of the haven they fantasized about.
Alien: Romulus' New Planet Yvaga III: Where Rain & Andy Are Going Explained
Alien: Romulus introduces an all-new planet to the Alien franchise, but is the paradise really the place that Rain and Andy think it is?
As far as the sequel’s timeline, updates from both Asbell and Alvarez would suggest that there could be a bit of a wait for the nextAlienmovie. Alvarez previously expressed that his philosophy is that “you should never make [a sequel] in two years,” in order to make sure audiences truly want it. With the story still being figured out and Alvarez not yet signed on, it’s likely that gears won’t really start turning on theAlien: Romulussequel until next year. Taking into account scheduling, filming could start in 2026 with a release to potentially follow in 2027.

Our Take On An Alien: Romulus Sequel
Why It’s Off To A Great Start Already
Alien: Romulus' reviewsand box office performance suggest that there’s still a great deal of audience interest in the franchise that Ridley Scott first started back in 1979. Though there are elements ofPrometheus(2012) andAlien: Covenant(2017) that push the franchise forward in exciting ways, one of the things that was missing from these prequels is a constant protagonist akin to Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley.
Spaeny delivers a strong performance as Rain inRomulusand proves herself a worthy Ripley successor, and it would be great to see her story continue in future films. Andy, too, an android, made for a surprisingly compelling character in the new film, and the franchise’s treatment of androids in the past suggests there could be an exciting evolution of that character moving forward. Though anAlien: Romulussequel may be a couple years off, bringing back Alvarez, Spaeny, and Jonsson is already a great start.
