The developers ofAssassin’s Creed Shadowssay most of the game can be completed with just one of its dual protagonists, but players are better off experimenting anyway. Although it’s not the first timeanAssassin’s Creedgame has had multiple playable characters, it is the first time the two of them have had such radically different playstyles. Naoe, the shinobi, embodies the classicAssassin’s Creedstyle, specializing in stealth and secrecy. Yasuke, meanwhile, is a heavily-armored samurai who walks right into the heart of battle, fending off enemies with deft skill, but far less subtlety.

And according to an interview withAssassin’s Creed Shadowsproducer Tu Yang and assistant director Zhu Bijia inGamersky, players can complete 90% of the game using just Naoe (or, presumably, just Yasuke), but are much better off experimenting with both protagonists. There’s quite a bit of exclusive content to each storyline, and, although it’s technically possible to complete most of the game with just one of them, players will get a more complete picture of the story by dabbling with both.

Devs Of Assassin’s Creed State They Want Players To Try Both Main Characters

Naoe & Yasuke Both Have A Lot To Offer

It is possible, then, to stick to one playstyle for almostthe entirety ofAssassin’s Creed Shadows. However, you may be missing out on quite a bit to do so. For example, there are unique routes tailored to each character’s strength in certain levels. Sometimes, the two characters follow the same paths; at other times, the same level might play out in two completely different ways depending on the character chosen. There may be a well-thought-out sneaking path around the back of a building for Naoe, and a path for Yasuke to blaze right through the front doors.

Screen Rant sat down with art director Thierry Dansereau to discuss the visual world of Assassin’s Creed Shadows and the new ways to interact with it.

According to the developers, the characters also have unique interactionswithin their specific missions - certain dialogue with characters they meet, or the events they witness, or a combination thereof. Naoe’s connection to the war may give her more of a personal angle against certain enemies, or in certain locations. With his own storyline and ties to the powerful lord Oda Nobunaga, Yasuke brings his own unique perspective to certain events.

Striking a balance between the two characters is an important aspect of developing themthroughout the plot, and balancing the story as you progress through the game. It’s also a way to stave off fatigue; games are a lot less fun when you stick to the same playstyle every time, and a lot more fun when you have options. It does sound like some missions will force you to use a specific character, but for the grand majority, players have the freedom of choice - and that’s a beautiful thing.

The Character Choice Is Up To You, As Naoe Can Complete The Entire Storyline

Some Players Will Choose Favorites

Still, some players will inevitably play favorites. Maybe they’ll just prefer playing stealthily, and choose to play as Naoe in most missions; and maybe they’ll get interested in Yasuke’s side of the story, and choose to take him along for most missions. The beauty of a game like this is thatyou can choose to stick with one character for the majority of the game, and the developers promise you’ll still have a complete experience. The choice is in your hands.

But even so, there’s merit to trying out both sides. Having that variety in both perspective and playstyle will make the game more interesting, if not more complete. For these reasons, while you’re allowed to pick between Naoe and Yasuke throughout most of the game, the developers ofAssassin’s Creed Shadowsencourage you to try both.
